Loosening of the Rubber Ring on Office Chairs

Admin October 22, 2026

The loosening of the rubber ring on office chairs may be caused by prolonged use and aging, improper use and wear, long-term pressure on the chair, or poor quality. It can be repaired by replacing the seal ring and preventive measures can be taken to avoid recurrence of the problem.

Analysis of Loosening Causes

  1. Prolonged Use and Aging: As the core component preventing air leakage in the chair, the seal ring gradually loses its elasticity after long-term use, leading to a decrease in sealing performance and loosening.
  2. Improper Use and Wear: Frequent adjustment of the chair height, vigorous shaking, or contact with sharp objects may directly wear the surface of the seal ring, damaging its structural integrity.
  3. Long-term Pressure on the Chair: When a lifting chair bears heavy loads for an extended period, the repeated extension and retraction of the air column generate bumps and vibrations, accelerating the loosening at the connection between the sealing sleeve and the seal ring.
  4. Poor Quality: Inferior seal rings may fail to fit tightly against the air column after installation due to insufficient material strength or dimensional deviations, leading to rapid loosening.

Self-repair Methods

  1. Prepare Tools: Purchase a new seal ring of the appropriate model and prepare a wrench or pliers for disassembly.
  2. Remove the Old Seal Ring: Use the tool to gently unscrew the original seal ring and clean the dust and debris on the surface of the chair's air column to ensure a flat installation surface.
  3. Install the New Seal Ring: Slide the new seal ring onto the air column, ensuring it is fully covered and not twisted. Press the edges to confirm the sealing performance.
  4. Check Functionality: Adjust the chair height and observe for air leakage or difficulty in adjustment. If the problem persists, recheck the installation steps.

Preventive Measures

  1. Reduce Frequent Adjustments: Avoid adjusting the chair height multiple times in a short period to reduce mechanical wear on the air column and seal ring.
  2. Regular Cleaning and Maintenance: Wipe the chair surface with a dry cloth every week to prevent dust from entering the air column and affecting sealing performance.
  3. Choose High-quality Products: When purchasing, prioritize office chairs that have passed international safety certifications (such as the BIFMA standard). Their seal ring materials are more resistant to aging, and their structural designs are more reasonable.

By performing targeted repairs and regular maintenance, the service life of the seal ring can be effectively extended, ensuring the stability and safety of the office chair.
