Office Chair Rotation Stuck

Admin October 14, 2026

The solution to the problem of an office chair rotating stiffly is to use an appropriate grease to lubricate the track of the chassis turntable, avoiding the use of oily lubricants or rust removers like WD-40.

The main reason for an office chair rotating stiffly or getting stuck is the lack of lubrication on the turntable track beneath the chassis, leading to dry friction between metal components. This friction hinders the normal rotation of the seat and, over prolonged use, may exacerbate component wear and shorten the lifespan of the office chair.

To address this issue, the following lubrication solutions can be adopted:

  • Use white lithium grease: It is recommended to choose white lithium grease with a viscosity grade of NLGI 2. This type of grease has excellent lubricating and anti-wear properties, effectively reducing friction between metal components. When applying, evenly spread the grease on the chassis turntable track and then repeatedly rotate the seat to ensure the grease is evenly distributed across the entire track. This will make the seat rotate more smoothly and reduce instances of getting stuck.

  • Use silicone-based grease: Silicone-based grease is also an effective option. It similarly has good lubricating properties and is not volatile, maintaining its lubricating effect for an extended period. The application method is the same as for white lithium grease; simply apply an appropriate amount of silicone-based grease to the turntable track and rotate the seat to distribute it evenly.

Precautions:

  • Avoid using oily lubricants: Oily lubricants tend to attract dust, forming greasy sludge that can actually worsen the seat's stiffness. Therefore, when selecting a lubricant, avoid using such products.

  • Do not misuse rust removers like WD-40: Although rust removers like WD-40 can temporarily remove rust from metal surfaces, they will wash away the existing grease, making the seat feel smoother in the short term but accelerating wear and shortening the lifespan over prolonged use. Therefore, when dealing with the issue of an office chair rotating stiffly, avoid using such rust removers.
