Office Chair Rotation Locking

Admin October 16, 2026

Office chair rotation locking can be achieved by adjusting the knob, locking the casters, or tightening the structure. The specific methods are as follows:

1. Using the built-in adjustment knob on the seat

Some mid-to-high-end swivel chairs are designed with round or square adjustment knobs at the base or beneath the seat. In addition to controlling height and tilt angle, some models also feature a rotation locking function. When operating, first check if there is an independent locking button around the knob or if the knob itself has locking positions (such as scale markings). After adjusting the chair to the desired position (e.g., a fixed orientation or height), press the locking button or rotate the knob to the locking position to secure the current state and prevent accidental rotation. This method is suitable for chairs with intact knob functions, offering simple operation without the need for additional tools.

2. Replacing with locking brake casters

If the swivel chair rotates too freely or cannot be fixed, it may be due to a lack of a locking mechanism in the original casters. In this case, you can replace them with brake-equipped casters (search keyword: "brake casters"). Before replacement, confirm the type of the original chair casters:

  • Snap-in type: The wheels are secured to the chair legs with snap-in clips. To remove, pull outward forcefully or press the clips.
  • Threaded type: The wheels are screwed into the chair legs and require a wrench to be rotated counterclockwise for removal.
When installing the new casters, ensure that the spring clips (brake mechanisms) are facing upward and in tight contact with the chair legs. In the locked state, pressing the brake pads on the wheels will fix the position, making them suitable for scenarios that require occasional movement but temporary fixation.

3. Tightening the connections between the base and the structure

If the chair exhibits play (looseness), unusual noises, or overall wobbling during rotation, it may be due to loose connecting screws. Use a screwdriver or wrench to check the following areas:

  • Armrest-to-seat connection: Tighten the fixing screws to reduce armrest wobbling.
  • Backrest-to-seat connection: Check if the screws in the backrest adjustment mechanism are secure.
  • Five-star base-to-baseplate connection: Confirm that the connecting screws between the baseplate and the chair legs are not loose.
Looseness is the most common cause of structural wobbling. Regularly checking and tightening the screws can significantly improve stability and extend the chair's lifespan.

Summary: Choose the corresponding solution based on the type of issueโ€”use the adjustment knob when the function is normal; replace with brake casters for caster issues; and tighten screws for structural looseness. If the problem persists, it is recommended to contact the manufacturer or a professional repair technician for further inspection.
