Office Chair Rotation Lock

Admin October 09, 2026

The rotation lock of an office chair can be achieved by pushing the lever inward. If the rotation is not flexible or there is abnormal noise, lubrication is required.

How to Lock the Rotation

The rotation locking function of an office chair is usually controlled by a lever located beneath the seat. When the lever is pushed inward, its internal mechanical structure engages with the fixed slots on the base, thereby restricting the chair's rotation and fixing it at the current angle. This design is commonly used in scenarios where a stable sitting posture is required, such as preventing the body from rotating with the chair and causing distractions during office work. When operating, pay attention to the direction in which the lever is pushed (usually marked with 'LOCK' or an arrow) to avoid damaging the components due to excessive force.

Solutions for Inflexible Rotation or Abnormal Noise

If the chair still rotates with difficulty or makes friction sounds even when unlocked, it may be due to a lack of lubrication on the track of the base turntable. The base turntable is a core component connecting the seat to the gas lift, and its track may experience increased friction over time due to dust accumulation or dried-up grease. In this case, follow these steps:

  1. Clean the track: Wipe the turntable track with a dry cloth to remove dust and residual old grease, preventing impurities from mixing into the new grease and accelerating wear.
  2. Apply grease: Choose silicone-based grease or white lithium-based grease (both are heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant, suitable for metal components) and apply it evenly to the inner side of the track using a cotton swab or a small brush. Avoid using ordinary engine oil or butter, as the former tends to evaporate and lose effectiveness, while the latter may attract dust and form sludge.
  3. Test by rotating repeatedly: After applying the grease, rotate the seat multiple times to allow the grease to fully penetrate and distribute evenly. If the abnormal noise disappears and the rotation is smooth, the treatment is complete; if the problem persists, check whether the turntable is deformed or if the bearings are damaged.

Precautions

  • Ensure the chair is on a level surface when operating the lever to prevent locking failure due to tilting.
  • It is recommended to perform lubrication treatment every 6-12 months, with the specific frequency depending on the usage environment (e.g., shorter intervals may be required in dusty areas).
  • If the chair still stutters after lubrication, it may be due to internal rusting of the gas lift or severe wear of the turntable, and professional maintenance personnel should be contacted to replace the components.
