Office Chair Rotation Explosion

Admin October 10, 2026

Office chair rotation explosion refers to the sudden explosive phenomenon of pneumatic lift-type swivel chairs caused by component defects, mostly due to inferior pneumatic rods, posing serious safety hazards.

Explosion Principles and Causes

Pneumatic rods are the core components for the lifting and lowering of swivel chairs. Essentially, they are miniature high-pressure containers filled with inert gases (such as nitrogen), achieving lifting and lowering through pressure differences. Legitimate products can withstand thousands of kilograms of pressure, but inferior pneumatic rods have three major defects:

  1. Gas Substitution: Unscrupulous manufacturers use compressed air instead of inert gases. The oxygen in the air can corrode the metal inner walls, making the steel brittle and reducing its pressure-bearing capacity.
  2. Thin Tube Walls: The wall thickness of the pneumatic rod is insufficient, unable to withstand normal pressure, especially under high temperatures or frequent lifting and lowering, causing a sudden increase in internal pressure.
  3. Temperature Effects: Friction during daily lifting and lowering generates heat. Combined with the impact of summer sun exposure or sudden sitting, it may trigger the expansion of tiny internal cracks, leading to an explosion.

Typical Accidents and Hazards

More than 40 swivel chair explosion accidents have occurred in China, with severe consequences:

  • 2013 Fujian Case: Ms. Liu was sitting on a swivel chair blow-drying her hair when the chair exploded. A steel tube about 2 centimeters in diameter pierced her lower body, leaving several pieces of metal debris in her intestines.
  • 2009 Shandong Case: A 14-year-old boy was adjusting a pneumatic chair when the top rod pierced his body, resulting in death.

Quality Inspections and Issues

According to a 2020 inspection by the State Administration for Market Regulation, the failure rate of office chairs reached 23.3%, with 17 batches being swivel chairs. The main issues included:

  • Inadequate High/Low-Temperature Resistance of Pneumatic Rods: Temperature changes cause gas expansion or contraction, increasing the risk of explosion.
  • Lack of Explosion-Proof Steel Plates: Explosion-proof steel plates can block fragments from pneumatic rods, but inferior products often lack this component.

Preventive Measures

  1. Choose Legitimate Products: Prioritize swivel chairs priced above 200 yuan with safety certifications (such as SGS, BIFMA) and avoid purchasing "three-no" products (no brand, no factory, no certification).
  2. Inspect Pneumatic Rods: Test the smoothness of lifting and lowering without jamming or unusual noises; confirm that a explosion-proof steel plate with a thickness of at least 2 millimeters is installed between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod.
  3. Use Correctly: Avoid violent operations (such as sudden sitting or frequent lifting and lowering), do not disassemble the pneumatic rod without authorization; keep away from high-temperature environments (such as direct sunlight or near heating sources).

Tip: Although swivel chair explosions are rare events, their consequences are severe. Consumers need to be vigilant, purchase qualified products through legitimate channels, and regularly inspect their usage status.
