Office Chair Rotation Accident

Admin October 12, 2026

Office chair rotation accidents mainly involve the explosion of the pneumatic rod in rotating chairs. Such accidents can cause serious personal injuries, and it is essential to pay high attention to their causes and preventive measures.

Accident Cases and Hazards

Explosions of rotating chairs have occurred multiple times, with shocking consequences. In 2013, Ms. Liu in Fujian Province was sitting on a rotating chair to blow-dry her hair when the chair suddenly exploded. A steel tube with a diameter of about two centimeters pierced through her lower body, and several pieces of metal debris were removed from her abdominal cavity. A 14-year-old boy in Jiaozhou, Shandong Province, was pierced through the chest by an exploding chair's steel column and died. A 68-year-old man in Yantai had his buttocks severely injured by the explosion, requiring dozens of stitches to close the wound. A woman in Xiamen was also injured by an exploding office chair. These cases demonstrate that rotating chair explosions can cause fatal or severely disabling injuries to users.

Cause Analysis

The core component of a rotating chair explosion is the pneumatic rod, which is essentially a miniature high-pressure container. Legitimate products are filled with inert nitrogen gas, which can withstand pressures of up to a thousand kilograms or even 2000 jin, offering relatively high safety. However, some unscrupulous manufacturers reduce costs by using compressed air instead of nitrogen. The oxygen in compressed air erodes the metal inner wall, gradually making the steel brittle. The heat generated by daily lifting and lowering friction further increases the internal pressure. When the pressure exceeds the limit that the pneumatic rod can withstand, an explosion occurs.

Safety Precautions

  1. Purchase with Safety Certification: When selecting a rotating chair, check for legitimate safety certification marks on the pneumatic rod to avoid buying unbranded products.
  2. Standardize Usage: Avoid violent operations during use, such as sitting or pressing down forcefully or frequently and rapidly lifting and lowering the chair. Do not disassemble the pneumatic rod without authorization to avoid damaging the internal structure or causing hazards.
  3. Promptly Identify Hazards: If the chair makes unusual noises such as hissing or wobbles unsteadily, it may be a sign of internal damage or abnormal pressure in the pneumatic rod. Stop using it immediately and contact a professional for inspection and repair.
