Removal of the Root of an Office Chair
Admin October 11, 2026
The removal of the root of an office chair requires step-by-step operations, mainly involving the separation of the chair legs, gas lift, and base. The specific methods are as follows:

I. Separation of Chair Legs and Gas Lift
- Removal of Chair Wheels: Turn the chair upside down to facilitate observation of the bottom structure. If the chair wheels are inserted directly into the chair legs through slots, hold the chair legs with one hand and pull the chair wheels straight out with the other hand. Some chair wheels may be tightly fitted due to long-term use, and can be slightly rotated to assist in separation.
- Separation of Gas Lift: The gas lift is usually connected to the chair legs by snapping or threading. For a snap-fit structure, turn the chair legs upside down and gently tap the bottom of the gas lift with a rubber mallet, or place a wooden board underneath and tap with a hard object (such as the handle of a screwdriver) to loosen the snap-fit by vibration. If the design includes a lift lever, press the lever and gently shake the seat cushion to assist in separating the gas lift from the chair legs. Control the force when tapping to avoid damaging the surface of the gas lift or chair legs.
II. Separation of Gas Lift and Base
- Removal of Fixings: The base is connected to the gas lift by either screw fixation or snap-ring fixation.
- Screw Fixation: Use a wrench or a socket of the corresponding size to rotate and remove the fixing screws on the base counterclockwise. If the screws are rusted, spray a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) to assist in disassembly.
- Snap-Ring Fixation: Use snap-ring pliers to clamp the two ends of the snap ring and expand it outward to remove the snap ring. If the snap ring is deeply embedded, use needle-nose pliers to assist in the operation.
- Extraction of Gas Lift: After removing the fixings, turn the base upside down and gently tap the top of the gas lift to loosen it, then pull it straight up. If it is too tightly fitted, place a wooden board on top of the gas lift and tap the wooden board with a rubber mallet to avoid direct tapping and deformation.
III. Precautions
- Operational Safety: Be patient during the removal process to avoid breaking the accessories or scratching your hands due to excessive force. If the chair has not been maintained for a long time, the accessories may be tightly fitted due to oxidation or dust accumulation, and force should be applied gradually.
- Tool Selection: Prioritize the use of dedicated tools such as rubber mallets and snap-ring pliers. If a rubber mallet is not available, tap with a book or wooden board to reduce the risk of damage to the accessories.
- Structural Differences: The designs of office chairs from different brands vary (such as the diameter of the gas lift and the fixation method of the base). The actual operation should adjust the step order or tool usage method according to the chair structure. If separation is not possible, refer to the product manual or contact after-sales service.
Tip: Store the removed accessories separately to avoid loss. If reassembly is required, follow the steps in reverse order.
