Office Chair Rises by Itself

Admin October 16, 2026

The reasons why an office chair rises by itself mainly include gas spring malfunction, accidental operation or jamming, mechanical structure wear, gas valve failure, and technological application design issues. Solutions need to be tailored to the specific cause.

Gas Spring Malfunction

The gas spring is the core component of an adjustable-height chair, filled with high-pressure nitrogen gas. It achieves height adjustment and locking through pressure differences between gas chambers. If the sealing ring ages and wears, impurities enter the interior, or the nitrogen purity is insufficient, it can lead to chronic air leakage or abnormal pressure rebound, causing the chair to rise automatically after losing downward pressure. The solution is to replace the qualified gas spring, which costs about a few dozen yuan. Choose a brand with a safety load-bearing rating that meets standards (usually supporting at least 120 kilograms or more) and has a good reputation. Non-professionals are advised to contact repair personnel or the manufacturer to replace original parts.

Accidental Operation or Jamming

Prolonged sitting may cause the body to press against the operation lever (usually located on the side of the chair), or the lever's spring may fail and get stuck in the "up" position, continuously releasing pressure from the gas spring. Some gravity-sensing adjustable chairs may misjudge weight changes and trigger automatic height adjustment if the sensing module malfunctions. The solution is to check if the operation lever is being pressed, manually reset it to the "locked" position, and test if the chair still rises automatically.

Mechanical Structure Wear

Wear on the lifting guide rails and wheels can cause uneven friction, or loose connecting bolts between the base and the gas spring can disrupt the balance of the gas spring's thrust, leading to spontaneous rising. The solution is to inspect the lifting guide rails, wheels, and connecting bolts on the base, repair worn parts, or tighten loose bolts.

Gas Valve Failure

If the control gas valve at the top of the gas spring has a stuck valve core or a broken spring, it cannot precisely control the entry and exit of nitrogen gas, potentially resulting in a "constantly open" state that causes continuous rising. The solution is to inspect and repair the gas valve, which requires professional maintenance or replacement.

Technological Application Design Issues

Some automatic adjustable chairs are equipped with sensors and control systems that may trigger the height adjustment mechanism due to perceived user commands (such as weight changes). If it is a design logic issue, contact the manufacturer to adjust or upgrade the system.

Notes: Wrapping tape around the chair cannot solve the issue of automatic rising; it is only used to prevent the chair legs from sliding or reduce noise. Low-quality or damaged gas springs pose a risk of explosion. Ensure safety during daily use and selection.
