Office Chair Right-Side Button

Admin October 16, 2026

The position and function of the right-side button on an office chair vary depending on the design. Here are some common types and their operating methods:

I. Lever/Handle Adjustment

If the chair has a small lever or long handle on the right side, it is usually used to control the backrest angle. Pulling the lever outward or lifting it upward unlocks the backrest. After leaning back to a comfortable position, push the lever back in or release it to lock the angle. Some chairs have the control device designed on the right side beneath the seat. When operating, you need to lift the lever upward while leaning back simultaneously, and it will automatically lock when released. This design is commonly found in basic office chairs, offering simple and intuitive operation suitable for quick posture adjustments.

II. Knob Adjustment

Some chairs are equipped with a circular knob on the right side beneath the seat or at the center of the base, with two main functions:

  1. Backrest Angle Locking: Rotate the knob counterclockwise by three-quarters of a turn or all the way to unlock the backrest. After adjusting the angle, rotate it clockwise to tighten and secure it.
  2. Recline Resistance Adjustment: Rotate the hidden knob on the base clockwise to increase the recline resistance (suitable for heavier individuals) and counterclockwise to decrease it (suitable for lighter individuals). This design is often seen in mid-range models, enabling multi-dimensional adjustments with a single knob. However, it is important to distinguish the labels of the functional knobs.

III. Button Unlocking

A few chairs require simultaneously pressing the buttons on both sides of the seat to unlock the backrest. After adjusting the angle, release the buttons to secure it. This design is typically used in models that emphasize safety, preventing accidental triggering that could cause the backrest to move suddenly. However, it requires the use of both hands, slightly reducing convenience.

IV. Special Designs in High-End Models

High-end office chairs may adopt more complex adjustment systems:

  • Dual-Knob Design: The right side is equipped with two independent knobs, controlling the backrest angle and recline force respectively. Synchronized adjustments are required for precise matching.
  • Herman Miller Aeron: The adjustment devices are concentrated on the left or right side of the seat. The rear knob controls the recline angle and locking, while a separate tension knob at the back of the chair adjusts the resistance (turning it forward increases resistance, and turning it backward decreases it).
  • Haworth Zody: The recline support force is controlled by a lever on the right side of the seat (turning it clockwise increases the force, and turning it counterclockwise decreases it). The button on the right side of the seat cushion is used to lock a specific angle. For such designs, refer to the specific model's instruction manual. It is advisable to confirm the functional labels before operation.

Summary: The functions of the right-side button on an office chair cover angle locking, resistance adjustment, and safety unlocking, among others. When choosing, consider the usage scenario (such as fixed office work or frequent adjustments) and budget comprehensively. If encountering complex designs, it is recommended to consult the product manual or contact after-sales service for guidance first.
