Office Chair Reupholstering

Admin October 09, 2026

The reupholstering of an office chair can be carried out following these steps:

Prepare Tools and Materials

  • Basic Tools: Screwdrivers (Phillips or flat-head, depending on the type of screws on the chair surface), wrenches for removing and installing screws; a new mesh chair surface that matches the size and mounting hole positions of the original office chair; rubber bands or zip ties to assist in securing the new chair surface.
  • Other Materials: If the original chair surface has a foam pad or backing board, check for aging. If aged, it is recommended to replace them together; spare screws can be prepared in case any are lost or damaged during disassembly.

Remove the Old Chair Surface

  • Lay the Chair Down: Turn the office chair upside down so that the bottom is facing up for easier operation.
  • Locate the Screws: The screws connecting the chair surface to the chassis are generally located at the four corners or edges beneath the chair surface. Some designs may hide the screws under decorative covers, which need to be pried open first; some screws may be covered by stickers on the bottom, which need to be peeled off.
  • Unscrew the Screws: Use a screwdriver to unscrew the screws and categorize them for easy reinstallation later.
  • Separate the Chair Surface from the Backrest: If the chair surface and backrest are connected with clips, gently press both sides of the clip and lift upwards to separate them.

Clean the Frame

After removing the old mesh, wipe the chair frame with a cloth to ensure it is clean and free of debris, preparing it for the installation of the new chair surface.

Install the New Chair Surface

  • Align the Hole Positions: Align the new mesh chair surface with the mounting hole positions on the chassis, ensuring the holes are perfectly matched. If the holes do not align, an appropriate model needs to be selected.
  • Tighten the Screws: Use a screwdriver to tighten the screws. Follow the principle of "diagonal fixation", tightening the diagonal screws first, then the others, to prevent uneven stress on the chair surface; alternatively, all screws can be initially fixed loosely, and then tightened one by one after adjusting the mesh to be flat and wrinkle-free.
  • Secure the Mesh: If the mesh has elastic bands or drawstrings, pull them evenly and secure them to the hooks on the edge of the chassis to keep the mesh flat and wrinkle-free.
  • Connect the Backrest: Press the backrest clips until you hear a "click" sound to confirm they are properly installed.

Test and Adjust

  • Test Stability: Stand the office chair upright and gradually apply pressure to test if the chair surface is stable. If it wobbles, retighten the screws.
  • Adjust Comfort: Sit on the chair surface to feel the comfort level. If the mesh is too loose or too tight, adjust the tightness of the drawstrings to improve it (some mesh designs have adjustment buckles).
  • Check Screws: Check all screws to ensure they are secure and prevent safety hazards caused by loosening.
