Requirements for Office Chairs

Admin October 14, 2026

A good office chair must meet various requirements in terms of functionality, dimensions, materials, design, and other aspects.

Functional Requirements:

  • It must be equipped with an adjustable height mechanism and 360-degree flexible rotation capabilities to accommodate different sitting postures.
  • The adjustment mechanism should be simple and easy to operate, and support the addition of accessories such as armrests at any time to enhance convenience.
  • The chair should move in harmony with the body, avoiding restrictions on a single sitting posture and reducing fatigue from prolonged sitting.

Dimensional Requirements:

  • Seat Height: The scientific range is 40-45 centimeters, ensuring that the knees form a 90-degree angle when the feet are flat on the ground. Mainstream products on the market support free adjustment from 360 to 480 millimeters. Individuals between 155 and 190 centimeters in height should adjust the chair according to their height. Those under 160 centimeters are advised to set it to the minimum of 360 millimeters, while those over 180 centimeters, when paired with a 75-centimeter desk, should maintain a height difference of 28-32 centimeters between the desk and chair.
  • Seat Depth: The optimal range is 38-42 centimeters. Too short a depth causes the thighs to hang, while too long a depth compresses the back of the knees.
  • Backrest Height: It should be at least 40 centimeters to provide stable support for the lower back.
  • Armrest Height: The ideal range is 20-25 centimeters, allowing the shoulders to hang naturally and reducing stress on the neck and shoulders.

Material Requirements:

  • The front edge of the chair should feature a rounded design to avoid pressure on the legs. The surface material should preferably be a breathable fabric or mesh, as leather, although luxurious, can cause sweating in summer.
  • Mesh materials offer superior breathability and are suitable for prolonged use.

Design Requirements:

  • The backrest should conform to the natural curve of the lower back to prevent spinal deformation and provide lumbar support.
  • The base should be a five-pronged design with a large surface area for safety, paired with wheels for easy mobility. The wheel material should be chosen based on the hardness of the floor (e.g., hard wheels for hard floors, soft wheels for carpets).
  • Designs that avoid snagging clothing or interfering with work should be prioritized, and the surface of the armrests should feel good to the touch.

Other Requirements:

  • The gas lift should be safety-certified, with a preference for a Class 4 gas lift (capable of supporting 300 kilograms). The explosion risk of a Class 3 gas lift is 17 times that of a Class 4.
  • The product should come with a guarantee and comprehensive after-sales service, and its appearance and color scheme should meet aesthetic needs.
