Office Chair Replacement Legs

Admin October 09, 2026

Replacing the legs of an office chair should be done following standard procedures. The specific steps are as follows:

1. Diagnose the Problem and Prepare Tools

First, observe the specific location and extent of the broken chair leg to determine whether only the leg needs to be replaced or if there is other structural damage. If the chair has been in use for a long time, is inexpensive, or if the main load-bearing structures (such as the central column or connectors) are severely damaged, it may be safer and more cost-effective to replace the entire chair. If only the leg needs to be replaced, prepare basic tools such as screwdrivers, wrenches, and pliers. If the leg is connected to the central column via a conical press fit, also prepare a rubber mallet or hammer (avoid using a metal hammer directly to prevent surface damage).

2. Remove the Old Chair Leg

Choose the appropriate method based on the connection between the leg and the central column:

  • Method 1 (Flat Washer and Snap Ring Fixing): Turn the chair upside down so that the legs are facing up. Check if there is a flat washer and snap ring (usually a metal ring or spring clip) at the bottom of the central column. Use pliers or a screwdriver to gently pry out the snap ring, then vertically pull out the old five-star leg. Maintain even force during the operation to avoid damaging the threads on the central column by pulling too hard.
  • Method 2 (Conical Press Fit Connection): If the leg is fixed to the central column via a conical surface press fit (without a snap ring), use a rubber mallet to evenly tap around the edge of the leg to loosen the conical surface and remove the leg. If tapping is ineffective, wrap a damp cloth around the contact surface between the central column and the leg (to increase friction) and then try rotating or gently pulling the leg. Do not use a hammer to tap directly, as this may deform the central column or break the leg.

3. Install the New Chair Leg

Align the new leg with the central column and secure it according to the connection method:

  • Flat Washer and Snap Ring Fixing: After inserting the new leg into the central column, reinstall the flat washer and snap ring, ensuring the snap ring is fully seated in the groove to prevent the leg from loosening.
  • Conical Press Fit Connection: Align the conical surface of the leg with the central column, apply downward pressure with your hand, or gently tap the top of the leg with a rubber mallet until the connection is tight and there is no wobbling. After installation, check if the leg is level to avoid chair wobbling due to installation misalignment.

Precautions: Turn off the chair's pneumatic rod (if any) before operation to prevent accidental lifting or lowering. If the leg is threaded onto the central column, use a screwdriver or wrench of the corresponding size to tighten it to avoid thread slippage. After installation, it is recommended to perform a load test (such as sitting lightly to observe stability) before normal use.
