Office Chair Replacement

Admin October 08, 2026

Office chair replacement involves various scenarios, including large-scale replacements by major companies, circulation in the second-hand market, and the multiple implications behind it.

Replacement Scenarios in Large Companies

Some large companies conduct large-scale office chair replacements. For example, ByteDance plans to replace office chairs in batches at its work locations in Beijing, Shanghai, and other cities from August 2026 to Q2 2027, switching from the Humanscale World, which has a retail price of approximately 8,000 yuan, to the Qingxian Smart S1, which has a publicly listed price of 2,549 yuan. The main reasons for replacement in large companies include cost considerations, as the Qingxian S1 is priced significantly lower than the original chairs, reducing the cost per chair by about two-thirds. Another reason may be to address employee feedback, such as issues with the original chairs' backrests not being able to stay locked in place. Large companies have distinct advantages in replacement, as they can secure lower procurement prices due to their scale and have closed-loop residual value export methods, such as the high demand in ByteDance's internal marketplace for the 1,999-yuan tier, where employees seek to purchase the replaced chairs.

Replacement Scenarios in the Second-Hand Market

Chairs replaced by large companies enter the second-hand market. For instance, the standard model of the Humanscale World chairs discarded by ByteDance has a second-hand price of around 26x yuan, and with the addition of a 50-yuan headrest and shipping costs, the total comes to around 35x yuan. Approximately over ten thousand of these chairs are circulating in the market, available for self-pickup in Shanghai, Beijing, and Guangzhou. When purchasing, it is necessary to distinguish between different models. The standard model features a white frame with a leather and sponge seat cushion, originally priced at around 7,000 to 8,000 yuan, while the World One model has an all-black mesh design and was originally priced at around 3,000 yuan, with different seating experiences between the two. Moreover, these discarded chairs have drawbacks such as limited recline angles, inability to lie flat for sleeping, stuffy sponge seat cushions in summer, lack of after-sales service for second-hand purchases, and reliance on luck for the chair's condition. Additionally, local life service platforms also have individuals or merchants posting second-hand office chair sales or purchase requests.

Potential Implications of Office Chair Replacement

Replacing office chairs carries multiple implications. Firstly, it enhances employee comfort, showing concern for their physical health and improving work conditions. Secondly, it elevates the company's image, achieving an upgrade in the office environment and enhancing external presentation. Thirdly, it promotes team collaboration, reflecting equality and respect, and increasing interaction and communication. Fourthly, it adapts to new work requirements, aligning with changes in work methods and technological applications.
