Office Chair Repair

Admin October 14, 2026

Office chair repair requires targeted methods based on different fault conditions:

Hydraulic Rod (Pneumatic Rod) Failure

  • Identify the Fault Cause: Observe and inspect to determine whether the issue is a leaking pneumatic rod, damage, or valve failure. For example, if the office chair cannot be raised or lowered normally or the movement is unstable, there may be a problem with the pneumatic rod.
  • Purchase a Compatible Pneumatic Rod: The specifications and models of pneumatic rods vary among different office chairs. Ensure you select the correct model before purchasing. You can refer to the chair's manual or consult the manufacturer.
  • Disassemble and Replace the Pneumatic Rod: First, detach the office chair from the base. Remove the fixing device at the connection point between the chair and the rod by rotating or prying. Take out the old pneumatic rod and insert the new one, then secure it.
  • Test and Adjust: After replacement, test whether the office chair can be raised and lowered normally and can be stably fixed at the desired height. If there are still issues, check components such as the valve and the chair base, and repair or replace them if necessary.
  • Maintenance: Regularly clean and lubricate the pneumatic rod using appropriate cleaning agents and lubricants. Avoid excessive or overloading use to extend the service life of the pneumatic rod.

Tilt to One Side

  • Check the Wheels: Place the chair upright and upside down to check if the wheels are uneven and whether each wheel foot is in contact with the ground. If damaged wheels are found, purchase a new set of matching wheels. You can contact the manufacturer with the chair model for an order or take an old wheel to an office supplies store to find a matching replacement set. When removing the casters, hold the caster wheel and the bottom of the chair with your hands and pull hard. If the clip cannot be pulled out, use a flat-head screwdriver to assist. Before installing new wheels, apply a small amount of spray lubricant to each socket on the chair base and tap each caster into the chair socket with a rubber mallet.
  • Check the Seat Plate: Place the chair on its side, locate the metal seat plate, and check if it is deformed or damaged. If there is a problem with the seat plate, it may need to be replaced.

Other Common Problems

If you need to align the chair and disassemble its base, place the office chair on a level surface, remove the components clamped at the bottom of the seat, and use an appropriate wrench to loosen and remove the fixing bolts or nuts on the base. If the chair is internally damaged, replace the corresponding components. You can refer to the manufacturer's manual. When removing the existing cylinder, use a cylinder wrench to open the cylinder and loosen it until it can be easily removed. When installing a new cylinder, purchase a suitable replacement part at a home improvement hardware store and insert the conical end of the new cylinder into the chair column. After the new cylinder is installed, reassemble the chair, tighten all bolts and nuts with a wrench, and check whether the cylinder can adjust the seat height normally. If the chair still has problems after following the above steps, consider discarding it and buying a new one or sending it to a specialized repair place for repair.
