Office Chair Refurbishment Cushion

Admin October 09, 2026

The office chair refurbishment cushion can be completed through steps such as disassembling the old cushion, cutting the fabric, securing the fabric, and installing the new cushion, or it can be quickly refurbished by directly using a thickened chair cover. Here are the specific methods:

If you choose a complete refurbishment, follow these steps:
First, disassemble the old cushion. Flip the chair over so that its back faces up. Use a screwdriver or awl to unscrew or pry out the screws or nails securing the cushion, retaining all hardware for subsequent installation. If the foam layer of the old cushion is severely collapsed or damaged, replace it with a new foam pad: Cut the foam according to the size of the chair seat, ensuring that the edges are neat and the thickness is uniform to avoid installation difficulties due to size discrepancies.

Next, cut the fabric. Lay the selected fabric face down on a flat surface. Place the cut cushion (or the original cushion frame) in the center of the fabric, leaving a 10-12 cm margin of fabric on each side. Mark the cutting line along the edge of the cushion with chalk, adjusting the position according to the fabric pattern to ensure that the final product's pattern is centered and aesthetically pleasing. Keep the blade vertical when cutting to avoid frayed edges on the fabric.

Then, secure the fabric. Align the center of the cushion with the center of the fabric, and temporarily secure it with a few staples or thumbtacks to prevent the fabric from shifting. Starting from one side of the cushion, roll up the reserved fabric inward by about 1 cm and secure it along the edge with a stapler every 2-3 cm. Keep the fabric flat during operation to avoid wrinkles or twists. Leave 2-2.5 cm unsecured at the corners to allow for tension adjustment when sewing the other side. After sewing one side, repeat the process on the opposite side to achieve a flat wrapping effect.

Finally, install the new cushion. Place the sewn cushion back in its original position on the chair, aligning the screw or nail holes, and reattach it using the original hardware. Tighten the screws step by step during installation to avoid tilting the cushion due to unilateral force.

For a quick refurbishment, you can directly use a thickened chair cover: Choose a chair cover made of ultra-soft material (such as velvet or memory foam) and ensure that its size matches the chair seat. After fully unfolding the chair cover, slip it over the chair from the back and adjust it to cover the entire old cushion, pressing firmly on the center of the seat to eliminate air. If the old cushion is severely collapsed, insert a thin foam sheet between the chair cover and the old cushion to enhance support. Chair covers are usually equipped with elastic straps or Velcro, which need to be secured to the bottom of the chair to prevent sliding.
