Office Chair Recycled Cotton

Admin October 09, 2026

Office chair recycled cotton usually refers to recycled sponge, which is made by bonding sponge waste with glue. It poses health risks, quality hazards, and industry chaos.

  1. Composition and Cost
Recycled sponge is made from sponge waste through a bonding process with glue. Its average cost is about half that of virgin sponge, making it a cost-saving option for some seat manufacturers. Enterprises in places like Anji County, Huzhou, Zhejiang, often use it for filling office chair cushions. However, it should be noted that the raw material sources may include inferior materials such as industrial waste or blackened crushed sponge.

  2. Health Risks
Recycled sponge poses significant health hazards. Firstly, residual glue during the processing may form yellow-white lumps or debris, which can cause allergic reactions upon direct skin contact. Secondly, chemical tests show that some products have excessive formaldehyde levels, and long-term use may lead to symptoms such as nausea and respiratory irritation. Additionally, if the filling is mixed with "black-hearted cotton" (such as industrial waste or moldy crushed sponge), it may carry harmful substances like bacteria and heavy metals, further threatening health.

  3. Quality and Durability
The physical properties of recycled sponge are significantly inferior to those of virgin sponge. It has poor elasticity and often shows signs of "sagging" within half a year, with a significant decrease in support over time, affecting sitting comfort and spinal health. In contrast, virgin sponge or high-density eco-friendly cotton can last for years and maintain stable resilience.

  4. Industry Chaos and Lack of Regulation
Some enterprises evade supervision by using recycled sponge for bulk orders while sending virgin sponge for testing, and even forge formaldehyde test reports. Such products often flow into the low-priced seat or sofa market, and consumer complaints are difficult to address due to the lack of clear standards. The current product quality management law does not have unified regulations for recycled sponge, leading to a chaotic market where even well-known brand OEM factories have terminated cooperation due to excessive complaints.

Suggestions: When purchasing office chairs, consumers should prioritize products clearly labeled as using virgin sponge or eco-friendly cotton and avoid being lured by low prices. After purchase, they can request a filling test report from the merchant and pay attention to intuitive indicators such as odor and elasticity.
