Office Chair Reclining Tutorial
Admin October 16, 2026
The operation of reclining an office chair (putting it down) should be carried out step by step according to the type of chair. The core process includes preparation, unlocking, adjusting the angle, locking, and resetting, as detailed below:

I. Preparation Before Operation
- Environmental Safety: Ensure there are no obstacles such as walls or furniture around to avoid collisions and injuries during operation.
- Check Chair Status: Confirm that the chair legs are firmly on the ground and there are no loose or damaged parts. If the chair has faults (such as detached wheels or a stuck adjustment lever), repair it before operation.
II. Core Operation Steps
Locate the Adjustment Lever/Button
- Pull-rod Type: Located on the right (or left) side of the seat bottom, near the connection with the backrest. Pull it horizontally outward to unlock.
- Toggle/Push-down Type: Integrated with or adjacent to the height adjustment lever. Push it down or pull it backward.
- Knob Type: A circular knob that adjusts the backward resistance by rotation. Some require a separate toggle to unlock.
- Push-button Type: Located under the seat or on the side of the backrest. Press it and lean back to trigger the recline.
- Electric Adjustment Chair: Operated through the side control panel. Press and hold the button marked with a backrest tilt icon for automatic adjustment.
Unlock and Adjust the Angle
- Pull-rod Type: Pull out the adjustment lever, hear a 'click' unlocking sound, and then lean back slowly. The backrest will recline with your body weight. After adjusting to the desired angle, push the lever back into place to lock.
- Toggle/Push-down Type: Push down or pull backward on the adjustment lever while leaning back. After releasing, the backrest may lock automatically or require resetting the lever to complete locking.
- Knob Type: First, rotate the knob to loosen the resistance, then pull a separate toggle to unlock the recline function.
- Push-button Type: Press the button and lean back slowly. The backrest will tilt automatically with your body movement (some may require manual force).
Confirm Locking Status
- After adjustment, try to push the backrest forward. If it cannot move, it means it is locked. Some chairs have angle markings or gear indicators (such as 'Office Mode' and 'Nap Mode'). You can confirm the position according to these markings.
III. Angle Recommendations
- Daily Office Work: Maintain a slight recline of about 110ยฐ to distribute lumbar pressure and reduce fatigue from prolonged sitting.
- Nap Relaxation: Adjust to between 110ยฐ and 130ยฐ, and use a lumbar support and U-shaped pillow to support the natural curve of the spine.
- High-end Models: Some chairs can recline up to 135ยฐ to 160ยฐ, approaching a lying-down position. However, ensure stable support.
IV. Resetting (Adjusting Back to Upright) Steps
- Unlock the Backrest Angle: Repeat the operation used for reclining (such as pulling out the lever or pressing the button). Some chairs do not require continuous pressing of the button during resetting.
- Adjust to Upright Position: Lean forward to leave the backrest, which will automatically rebound due to gravity or springs. If the rebound is insufficient, gently push the backrest to vertical with both hands, confirm it is locked, and then release the adjustment mechanism.
V. Precautions
- Avoid leaning back quickly or shaking violently to prevent dizziness or loss of balance.
- Do not place your feet on the chair or desk to avoid tipping over due to a shifted center of gravity.
- Avoid maintaining a reclined position for a long time (especially napping for more than 30 minutes) to prevent muscle stiffness.
- Electric chairs should be operated through the control panel. Do not manually force the backrest.
