Reclining Office Chairs

Admin October 16, 2026

The design of office chairs to recline is based on ergonomic considerations, and the methods for adjusting the recline vary depending on the type of chair.

Reasons for Designing Office Chairs to Recline

  • Maintaining the Curvature of the Spine and Hips: When sitting in a chair, there is a natural curvature between the spine and hips. Sitting upright in a chair for extended periods can compress this curvature, leading to fatigue and discomfort in the lower back and hip muscles. A reclining design helps maintain this curvature, effectively reducing muscle strain.
  • Improving Comfort and Work Efficiency: A reclined backrest angle provides more comfortable support, reducing pressure on the spine. This allows individuals to rest or work in a more natural and comfortable posture, promoting relaxation and thereby enhancing work efficiency.
  • Promoting Blood Circulation: Reclining office chairs help promote blood circulation, reducing the risk of varicose veins in the lower limbs and alleviating fatigue in the feet and lower legs.

Methods for Adjusting the Recline of Office Chairs

  • Lever Adjustment System: Commonly found in mid-range and high-end office chairs. First, locate the adjustment lever, usually positioned beneath the seat near the right or left side. If the chair has a locking function, gently pull up or push down the lever to release the lock. Then, adjust your body weight to lean backward while adjusting the lever to achieve a comfortable recline angle. Once the desired angle is reached, pull up or push down the lever again to lock the position.
  • Knob Adjustment System: Often used in ergonomic chairs. Locate the knob, typically positioned beneath the seat near the center close to theๆ”ฏๆŸฑ (support column). Turning the knob clockwise usually increases the resistance of the backrest when reclining, while turning it counterclockwise decreases the resistance. Some chairs may have a separate knob for adjusting the recline angle; refer to the product manual for specific instructions.
  • Pneumatic Adjustment System: Used in some modern office chairs. The pneumatic lever is usually arranged together with the height adjustment lever, and the recline is adjusted by pushing in different directions. Simply pull the lever gently to adjust the backrest to a comfortable angle; the pneumatic system provides a smooth adjustment experience.

Additionally, the recline angle of office chairs should generally not be too large, typically around 10 degrees. This angle provides sufficient comfort and support without affecting body stability.
