Office Chair Reclining Too Loose

Admin October 09, 2026

An overly loose reclining office chair can be fixed by adjusting the tension, tightening components, or replacing damaged parts. Here are the specific methods:

1. Adjust the Reclining Tension

Insufficient reclining tension is a common cause, and the resistance needs to be adjusted according to body weight:

  • For heavier individuals: Increase the resistance to prevent sinking when reclining. The adjustment is usually done via a knob or lever. For example, turning the resistance lever forward increases the resistance.
  • For lighter individuals: Decrease the resistance to make reclining easier by performing the reverse operation.
  • Operation note: No tools are required for adjustment, but multiple tests are needed to achieve a comfortable state. Avoid setting the resistance too high, which can make operation difficult.

2. Check and Tighten Loose Components

Loose or aging components can directly affect stability and need to be addressed accordingly:

  • Loose adjustment rod screws: Use a Phillips screwdriver to rotate the plastic cover at the base connection counterclockwise. After exposing the metal frame, use a wrench to tighten the 6-8 fixing screws. It is recommended to tighten them symmetrically at 90ยฐ intervals to prevent uneven force distribution.
  • Failed spring engagement: Check the spring pin at the bottom of the chair back. If the spring has slipped out, use needle-nose pliers to re-engage it in the slot. If the spring is deformed, measure its original length and replace it with a replacement spring with a diameter of 3-5mm.
  • Excessive clearance in the gas lift: Remove the dust cover at the bottom of the seat and rotate the gas lift adjustment knob (black plastic part) counterclockwise. Test the rebound resistance in 30ยฐ increments until the reclining is stable.

3. Repair the Reclining Lock Function

If the chair cannot be locked in the reclined position, check the following components:

  • Adjustment lever: If the lever is loose, re-engage it in the base slot. If the plastic clip is broken, replace it with a clip of the same specification.
  • Gas spring: If the support is unstable or suddenly sinks, replace it with a compatible gas spring. Turn the chair upside down during operation to prevent the gas spring from popping out and causing injury.
  • Base clip: First, tighten the fixing screws. If the clip is severely worn, replace it with a clip of the same model.

4. Emergency Reinforcement Tips

When no professional tools are available, temporary measures can be taken to maintain stability:

  • Cut a 3cm-wide strip from a bicycle inner tube and wrap it around the joint between the chair back and the base.
  • Use rubber bands to tie the movable joints of the gas lift to temporarily maintain stability for 3-7 days.

Recommendation: After long-term use, check the tightness of the screws every quarter. Individuals weighing over 80 kg should pay attention to the wear of the gas lift. When purchasing, prioritize models with a three-position backrest lock function and a steel-frame backrest for better durability.
