Play in the Reclining Position of Office Chairs
Play in the reclining position of office chairs usually relates to issues such as an unlocked tilt mechanism, improper tension adjustment, material or structural problems, or uneven flooring, and can be resolved through targeted adjustments.

Tilt Mechanism Not Properly Locked
Most office chairs are equipped with a tilt-lock function. If not operated correctly or if the locking mechanism is faulty, the chair may automatically recline when sitting due to uneven weight distribution. Check if the locking handle is in the 'locked' position. Some chairs require the handle to be operated at a specific angle (such as in an upright position) to take effect. If the handle is loose or cannot fix the angle, it may be due to wear on the internal spring or catch, and you need to contact after-sales service to replace parts.
Improper Tilt Tension Adjustment
The tilt tension adjustment device (usually a knob or lever) at the bottom of the chair controls the reclining resistance. If the resistance is set too low, the body pressure when sitting will overcome the resistance and cause the chair to recline. Turning the adjustment knob counterclockwise increases the resistance (some chairs require clockwise adjustment; refer to the instruction manual). After adjustment, test the sitting stability to ensure the resistance is appropriate and the reclining action is smooth without stuttering.
Material or Structural Issues
If the chair material is too soft (such as a low-density foam seat cushion) or the structure is unstable (such as a deformed five-star base or a loose gas lift), it can cause the center of gravity to shift when sitting, triggering the chair to recline. Check if the connections between the chair's components are tight, especially the fixing screws of the gas lift with the base and the backrest with the seat cushion. If the material is aged and deformed, replace the components or have the entire chair repaired; if it is a new chair, it may be a design defect, and it is recommended to contact the manufacturer for handling.
Uneven Flooring
When the chair is placed on an uneven floor or carpet, the five-star base may not be able to bear the weight evenly, causing the chair to wobble when sitting and triggering the reclining mechanism. Move the chair to a flat, hard surface (such as tiles or wooden floors), and avoid thick carpets or sloped floors. If you must use a carpet, place anti-slip mats or hard pads under the five-star base to increase stability.
Other Adjustment Suggestions
Some chairs are equipped with lever or gas lift adjustment devices that can further optimize the reclining function:
- Adjust the backrest range: Use the lever to control the maximum reclining angle of the backrest to avoid excessive reclining;
- Limit the rocking function: If the chair supports front-to-back rocking, you can turn off this function or reduce the rocking range;
- Refer to the instruction manual: Different brands have significant differences in adjustment methods (for example, Herman Miller requires pressing a button for adjustment, while Sihoo may use a knob for control). Be sure to operate according to the model.
If the problem persists after adjustment, it may be an internal mechanical failure (such as a broken spring or worn gears), and you need to contact a professional repair technician for inspection and repair.
