Looseness in Office Chair Reclining

Admin October 09, 2026

The looseness in the reclining function of an office chair can be resolved through the following methods:

Gas Cylinder Issues: The gas cylinder is the core component enabling the reclining function of an office chair. If there are faults such as air leaks, it can lead to uncontrolled reclining. Check for signs of gas leakage, such as oil stains around the gas cylinder. If a problem is found, promptly contact a professional repair technician or the manufacturer to replace it with a qualified gas cylinder.

Loose Chassis: Loose screws and other components connecting the chassis to the chair's main body can affect the overall stability of the chair and cause abnormal reclining function. Check if the screws connecting the chassis to the chair frame are tightened and look for any signs of looseness or detachment. For loose screws, use appropriate tools to tighten them. If components are damaged, such as stripped nuts, replace them with new ones in a timely manner.

Reclining Adjustment Device Failure: Office chairs usually have dedicated reclining adjustment handles or buttons to control the reclining angle. If these adjustment components are damaged, such as buttons that do not rebound after being pressed or handles that do not rotate smoothly, it can lead to reclining looseness. For damaged adjustment buttons or handles, you can attempt to repair them, such as cleaning internal debris or replacing springs. If they cannot be repaired, replace them with new adjustment devices.

Overall Chair Structure Deformation: Long-term high-frequency use or uneven force distribution can cause deformation of the chair's frame structure, such as a bent backrest or a twisted base, which in turn leads to reclining looseness. Carefully observe the frame structure of the chair. For slightly deformed parts, you can try to correct them or replace the components.

Loose Adjustment Rod Screws: If the backrest wobbles significantly during reclining and is accompanied by a clicking noise, it is often due to loose adjustment rod screws. Use a Phillips screwdriver to rotate the plastic cover at the base connection counterclockwise to expose the metal fixing bracket. Then, use a wrench to tighten the 6 - 8 fixing screws one by one (you can operate them symmetrically at 90ยฐ intervals to prevent uneven force distribution).

Spring Retention Failure: If the backrest has weak rebound, it may be due to spring retention failure. Locate the spring pin at the bottom of the backrest and use needle-nose pliers to re-insert the slipped spring hook into the slot. If the spring is deformed, you can purchase a replacement spring with a diameter of 3 - 5mm online (the price is approximately 5 - 15 yuan). Be sure to measure the length of the original spring before purchasing.

Excessive Gap in the Gas Cylinder Rod: An excessive gap in the gas cylinder rod can also cause reclining looseness. Remove the dust cover at the bottom of the seat, locate the gas cylinder adjustment knob (usually a black plastic part), and rotate it counterclockwise to increase the support force. It is recommended to test the rebound resistance in stages of 30ยฐ during adjustment.
