Office Chair Reclining Instability

Admin October 09, 2026

Office chair reclining instability can be resolved by adjusting the reclining resistance, checking the reclining lock, or replacing the gas spring. Specific operations should be tailored according to the user's weight and the condition of the components. Here are the detailed steps:

If the user is heavy, increase the reclining resistance. The reclining resistance of an office chair is usually controlled by a knob or lever beneath the seat. Turning it clockwise increases the resistance, while turning it counterclockwise decreases it. For heavier users, if the resistance is too low, the chair back may drop rapidly due to insufficient support, causing instability. In this case, gradually increase the resistance until a uniform support force is felt during reclining, and the chair back does not suddenly drop. Be cautious when adjusting to avoid over-tightening and damaging the adjustment mechanism.

If the user is light, decrease the reclining resistance. For lighter users, if the resistance is too high, reclining requires excessive force, which can lead to the chair back getting stuck or being unable to maintain balance. In this case, turn the adjustment knob or lever counterclockwise to reduce the resistance until the chair back angle can be easily controlled during reclining, with no feeling of dropping. After adjustment, test multiple times to ensure the resistance matches the user's weight.

If the reclining lock fails, check the metal pull rod. The reclining lock achieves its locking function by connecting the metal pull rod to the base slot. If the pull rod becomes loose, the chair back cannot be fixed at the set angle, causing reclining instability. In this case, reinsert the pull rod head into the base slot to ensure a tight connection. If the plastic clip at the end of the pull rod breaks, replace it with a clip of the same specification to prevent the pull rod from detaching due to clip failure. When replacing, choose a part with the same size and material as the original clip to ensure compatibility.

If there is a problem with the gas spring, replace it with a compatible one. The gas spring is the core component supporting the chair back's reclining. If it leaks air, ages, or has an incompatible specification, it can cause insufficient support or sudden dropping during reclining. In this case, measure the dimensions of the original gas spring (such as length, diameter, and stroke) and select a gas spring of the same specification for replacement. Before replacement, release the pressure inside the gas spring to avoid accidents during operation, then disassemble the old gas spring and install the new one according to the instructions.
