Office Chair Reclining Function Failure

Admin October 11, 2026

The failure of the reclining function in an office chair usually stems from issues in the base (tray), specifically problems with the spring-damper system or the control locking mechanism, which can be resolved through targeted maintenance.

1. Control Lock or Lever Mechanism Failure

The reclining function is typically adjusted using a handle on the armrest. If the handle feels loose, stuck, or offers no resistance when moved, it may indicate that the internal connecting parts of the lever have come loose or are damaged. During maintenance, repeatedly operate the handle to assess its resistance and rebound smoothness. If the handle mechanism itself is abnormal, disassemble the base to inspect whether the connection points between the lever and the spring are loose or broken. Replace damaged connecting parts or springs as necessary.

2. Damage to Internal Mechanical Components in the Base

The springs or dampers within the base are core components of the reclining function. Prolonged use can lead to metal fatigue, aging, or quality defects, resulting in spring breakage or damper failure, manifested as an inability to rebound when leaning back or excessive shaking. During maintenance, carefully listen for any abnormal creaking or metal breaking sounds in the base area while leaning back. If internal damage is confirmed, disassemble the base to replace broken springs or failed dampers, and check for loose fasteners.

3. Loose Structural Connections

If the connecting screws between the base, seat cushion, and gas lift (pneumatic rod) are loose, it can cause instability in the entire linkage structure, affecting the reclining function. During maintenance, turn the chair upside down (with caution) and use an appropriate wrench to inspect and tighten all visible base connection screws one by one, especially at the interfaces between the seat cushion and the base, and between the base and the gas lift. If any screws are stripped or damaged, replace them with screws of the same specification.

Maintenance Precautions

  • Differentiate Function Failures: Before maintenance, confirm that only the reclining function is abnormal and that the height adjustment function is normal to avoid misdiagnosis.
  • Safe Operation: When disassembling the base or turning the chair upside down, wear protective gloves to prevent injury from parts or the chair tipping over.
  • Professional Assistance: If you are unfamiliar with mechanical structures, it is advisable to contact after-sales service or a professional maintenance technician to avoid secondary damage caused by improper operation.

By following these steps, you can systematically troubleshoot and repair the reclining function failure in an office chair, restoring its normal use.
