Office Chair Reclining Backwards Issue
If an office chair reclines backwards incorrectly or fails to return to its normal position, it is usually related to a malfunction in the adjustment mechanism or gas lift. You can troubleshoot and fix the issue through the following steps:

Adjust the Control Lever
If the backrest cannot rebound after fully reclining, check the metal adjustment lever beneath the seat (usually located at the connection between the seat and the backrest). Operation Method: After straightening the backrest, press the adjustment lever continuously 5-6 times to release the air pressure and achieve reset. If the control lever is accidentally pushed into the fixing hole, causing it to lock, pull it out, wait for the backrest to return to its position, and then push it back into the fixing hole. This step is suitable for cases where the gas lift is not damaged but the adjustment mechanism is stuck.Knob-Type Adjustment
For chairs with knob-type adjustments (common in some ergonomic chairs), locate the circular knob at the bottom right of the chair. Operation Method: Turn the knob clockwise to the end, and then turn it back about 45 degrees to test the force. If you encounter resistance or jamming, it may be due to worn internal gears or accumulated dust. Remove the knob completely, apply a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40) to the threads, and then reinstall it. Lubrication reduces mechanical friction and restores smooth adjustment.Check the Anti-Reclining Clips
There are usually two plastic clips at the connection between the metal support frame (five-star base) at the bottom of the chair and the gas column, which are used to limit the reclining range. Inspection Method: If the clips are detached or broken, the backrest may recline uncontrollably. Bend down to check if the clips are in place. If they are missing, contact the manufacturer for replacement parts. Although small, this component is crucial for maintaining reclining stability.Check for Structural Damage
If the above methods do not work, observe whether there are cracks or deformations in the backrest support rod, nylon sliders, or polyurethane dampers. Recommendation: Long-term use may cause wear and tear on these components, especially for ergonomic chairs produced after 2017. If the usage cycle exceeds 50,000 times, it is recommended to replace the entire adjustment module (requires professional operation). Self-disassembly may damage the seal of the gas lift, leading to safety hazards.Daily Maintenance
Preventive Measures: Clean the accumulated dust inside the adjustment mechanism with a soft brush every quarter to prevent dust from entering the gas lift or gear structure. Avoid jumping on the seat or applying lateral force to prevent the gas lift from shifting. If the chair is left unused for a long time, it is recommended to adjust the backrest to an upright position to reduce spring fatigue. Regular maintenance can extend the service life and reduce the failure rate.
Tip: If the gas lift makes a hissing sound, the seat sinks, or there are abnormal noises during adjustment, it may indicate that the seal of the gas lift has failed. Stop using it immediately and replace it to prevent the risk of explosion. Non-professionals should not disassemble the gas lift by themselves.
