Office Chair Reclining Backwards
Admin October 11, 2026
An office chair reclining backwards may be caused by issues such as adjustment mechanism failure, damage to the base or tray, loose or missing screws, or hydraulic system failure. The backrest can be adjusted back by using adjustment buttons, rotating knobs, adjusting the gas lift, consulting the manual, or contacting professionals.

Reasons for an Office Chair Reclining Backwards
- Adjustment Mechanism Failure: For chairs that rely on pneumatic adjustment, if the backrest adjustment handle is not properly locked, the chair may recline backwards. In this case, locate the adjustment handle at the bottom of the chair, try pushing it inward or pressing it downward while adjusting your back to the appropriate angle, and then release the handle. If the spring is found to be broken, the support frame needs to be replaced.
- Damage to the Base or Tray: The tray is a metal component that connects the backrest to the base. If it is desoldered, cracked, or deformed, it can lead to loss of control when reclining. In such cases, it is generally necessary to replace the tray or the base. Simple welding may not fix the issue and could even cause the chair to tilt or affect the gas lift rod.
- Loose or Missing Screws: Check the screws at the connection between the backrest and the base, especially non-standard screws. If the screws are loose or stripped, use a wrench to tighten them or replace them with standard screws. Sometimes adding a washer can also prevent the screws from interfering with the movement of the hydraulic rod.
- Hydraulic System Failure: If the pivot screw of the hydraulic rod is missing or the hydraulic mechanism fails, the backrest cannot be fixed. You can lay the chair on its side, check the connection of the hydraulic rod, and reinstall or replace the screws, such as using a No. 10 standard screw instead of a non-standard one. If the spring under the chair is damaged, the support frame may need to be replaced. If the gas lift rod is damaged, since its quality affects the stability of the chair, it is recommended to replace the chair if it does not have a safety certification to ensure safe use.
Methods to Adjust the Backrest Back
- Adjustment Buttons or Handles: Many office chairs have adjustment buttons or handles on the side or near the backrest. After pressing or pulling these devices, the angle of the backrest will change. At this time, push the backrest forward to return it to the appropriate position.
- Rotating Knobs: Some office chairs rely on rotating the knob on the backrest for adjustment. When turning the knob, the backrest will change its angle. At the same time, gently push the backrest to find a comfortable angle.
- Gas Lift Adjustment: Some office chairs use a gas lift to adjust the backrest. Locate the gas lift adjustment device at the bottom or side of the chair, operate it according to the instructions, and change the angle of the backrest by controlling the rise and fall of the gas lift, thus adjusting the backrest back to normal.
- Consult the Manual: Different brands and models of office chairs have different adjustment methods. If the above methods do not apply, consult the manual and follow the instructions.
- Contact Professionals: If the problem still cannot be solved, contact the manufacturer's customer service or professional repair personnel.
