Office Chair Reclining Angle Adjustment
Admin October 14, 2026
The reclining angle of an office chair should be adjusted scientifically according to different scenarios, as follows:

I. National Standards and Reference Angles
According to the national standard 'Ergonomic Requirements for Healthy Homes - Part 3: Office Desks and Chairs', the original reference angle (the angle between the backrest and the seat surface) of an office chair should be 90ยฐ to 95ยฐ. This angle meets the needs of the human body's natural sitting posture, reduces spinal pressure, and avoids muscle fatigue caused by prolonged upright sitting or excessive reclining.
II. Recommended Angles for Different Scenarios
- Focused Work
- 90ยฐ-100ยฐ: Suitable for tasks requiring focused vision, such as typing and operating a computer. This angle keeps the body leaning forward, reducing pressure on the neck and shoulders.
- 100ยฐ-110ยฐ: Suitable for reading or thinking. With a slightly reclined back, it can disperse spinal pressure and relax the body and mind.
- Lunch Break Relaxation
- 110ยฐ-130ยฐ: Close to a semi-reclined position, combined with a U-shaped pillow and lumbar support, it can reduce lumbar spine pressure and promote blood circulation. However, it should be noted that reclining angles exceeding 120ยฐ significantly reduce concentration and are not suitable for work scenarios.
- Forward-Leaning Work
- Some ergonomic chairs support 5ยฐ-15ยฐ forward-leaning adjustment. When leaning forward, the pelvis naturally rotates forward, keeping the spine in a neutral position, which can reduce pressure on the lumbar spine and intervertebral discs, suitable for tasks requiring fine operations such as writing and drawing.
III. Adjustment Methods
- Lever-Type: There is usually an adjustment lever under the seat. Pulling it up or pushing it down and then leaning back changes the angle, which locks after release.
- Knob-Type: By rotating the knob on the side or back of the chair, the tightness of the gas spring is adjusted to control the reclining resistance or lock the angle.
- Electric-Type: High-end office chairs are equipped with buttons or control panels for precise and stepless angle adjustment.
- Forward-Leaning Function Adjustment: Usually, there is an adjustment lever or knob on the right side or under the seat cushion. Pulling it backward or downward unlocks it, and then applying slight pressure to the back allows simultaneous forward leaning. After adjustment, it needs to be reset and locked.
IV. Precautions
- Health Risks: Excessive reclining angles (such as exceeding 120ยฐ) may cause the cervical spine to deviate from its physiological curvature, leading to strain or pain; compress the chest cavity, affecting breathing; and reduce blood supply to the brain, causing dizziness.
- Operational Safety: Before adjustment, ensure the ground is level to avoid accidents caused by chair sliding.
- Functional Suitability: When using the forward-leaning function, confirm that the chair supports this design and operate it correctly according to the instructions.
