Office Chair Reclining and Tipping Over

Admin October 12, 2026

An office chair tipping over when reclining may be related to improper adjustment or damaged components, and can be resolved by checking and adjusting the control lever or replacing damaged parts.

First, check the status of the control lever. If the backrest of the office chair cannot return to its original position after reclining, it is likely that the control lever has been accidentally pushed into the fixing hole, preventing the backrest from resetting normally. The control lever is usually located on the side of the chair and is used to adjust the angle and fix the position of the backrest. When pushed into the fixing hole, the backrest is locked at the current angle and cannot automatically rebound. In this case, the control lever needs to be pulled out again to allow the backrest to return smoothly, and then pushed into the appropriate fixing hole as needed to fix the backrest angle.

Second, inspect the components under the chair. The springs and gas lift under the chair are key components that affect the chair's stability and backrest function. If the springs are damaged, it can lead to insufficient support for the chair, preventing the backrest from rebounding normally and even causing the chair to tip over when reclining. In this case, the entire support frame may need to be replaced. Damage to the gas lift can affect the chair's height adjustment function and overall stability, and it is also recommended to inspect and replace it. When inspecting, observe whether the gas lift has any abnormal phenomena such as air leakage or deformation, and replace it promptly if found.

Finally, check the metal support frame at the bottom of the chair. If the anti-recline buckles on the metal support frame at the bottom of the chair come off, it can also cause the backrest to lose control. Check whether the two plastic buckles at the connection between the five-star base and the gas column are in place. These buckles serve to fix and limit the recline angle of the backrest. If they come off or are damaged, the backrest may lose control and tip over backward. If the buckles are found to be out of place or damaged, they should be installed or replaced promptly.
