Office Chair Reclining Adjustment
Admin October 14, 2026
The method for adjusting the reclining of an office chair depends on the chair type, with common adjustment mechanisms including levers, knobs, and pneumatic systems. The specific steps are as follows:

I. Lever Adjustment System
Operation Location: Usually located on the right or left side beneath the seat, with some executive chairs having the adjustment handle on the right side of the seat.
Adjustment Steps:
- If the chair has a locking function, release the lock first (e.g., by pulling or pressing the locking mechanism).
- Lean your body weight backward while operating the lever (e.g., pulling the handle or pushing the lever) to slowly recline the backrest to a comfortable angle.
- Locking Position: Some chairs require operating the lever again (e.g., pushing it back or pulling it back) to fix the angle; executive chairs may require releasing the handle after reaching the target angle to fix it.
Special Scenarios: To adjust back to the original angle, pull the handle again and relax your back; the backrest will automatically rebound or may need to be manually tilted forward to reset.
II. Knob Adjustment System
Operation Location: Mostly located beneath the seat near the central support column, with some chairs having an independent knob to control the reclining angle.
Adjustment Steps:
- Adjust Reclining Resistance: Turn the knob clockwise to increase reclining resistance (suitable for users with heavier body weight or needing stable support), and counterclockwise to decrease resistance (suitable for users with lighter body weight or needing flexible reclining).
- Adjust Reclining Angle: If the chair is equipped with an independent angle knob, refer to the product manual for operation (e.g., turning to a specific scale or gear).
Note: Some chairs may require simultaneous operation of the knob and lever, depending on the actual design.
III. Pneumatic Adjustment System
Operation Location: The pneumatic lever is usually integrated with the height adjustment lever, located on one side beneath the seat.
Adjustment Steps:
- Push the lever in different directions to achieve reclining: for example, pushing the lever forward reduces the reclining angle, and pulling it backward increases the angle.
- The pneumatic system provides a smooth adjustment experience without the need for additional locking; the angle automatically fixes after stopping the operation.
IV. Handling Special Situations
- Hardware Damage: If the spring beneath the chair is broken or deformed, replace the support frame; if the gas cylinder is damaged (e.g., leaking gas, sinking) or lacks safety certification (e.g., missing SGS, BIFMA certification), it is recommended to replace the chair directly to avoid the risk of tipping over.
- Center of Gravity Stability: When adjusting the reclining angle, ensure the overall center of gravity of the chair is stable to avoid tipping over due to excessive reclining.
V. Adjustment Precautions
- Angle Selection:
- For focused work, it is recommended to have a smaller reclining angle (e.g., 5ยฐ-10ยฐ) to keep the line of sight horizontal;
- For relaxed thinking, adjust to 15ยฐ-25ยฐ to relieve lower back pressure;
- For short breaks, appropriately recline to about 30ยฐ to relax the back muscles.
- Safety Inspection: Before adjusting, confirm that the chair has no looseness or abnormal noises, and the gas cylinder has no gas leakage; after adjusting, test the stability to avoid sudden tipping over.
