Office Chair Reclining Adjustment
Admin October 09, 2026
Adjusting the reclining function of an office chair or an adjustable-height chair requires selecting the appropriate method based on the chair type. The core steps include unlocking the recline, adjusting the angle, and then securing it. Some chairs allow for adjusting the tension or multi-stage locking. Here are the specific operations:

Basic Recline Angle Adjustment (Common Handle Type)
- Locate the Adjustment Handle: Typically found on the right side of the chair, beneath the seat cushion, or on the side of the armrest. Some chairs have a separate recline adjustment lever.
- Unlock the Recline: Pull the handle outward or lift it upward to allow the chair back to enter a free-recline state. At this point, you can lean back slowly using your back strength to reach the desired angle.
- Secure the Angle: After adjusting to a comfortable position, release the handle, and the chair back will automatically lock. If you need to reset it, pull the handle again and relax your back, and the chair back will spring back to its initial position.
Backrest Tension/Tightness Adjustment (Knob Type)
- Locate the Adjustment Knob: Usually located at the bottom of the chair (near the gas lift) or on the side, used to control the resistance during recline.
- Adjust the Tension: Turning the knob clockwise increases the recline resistance, suitable for heavier individuals; turning it counterclockwise decreases the resistance, suitable for lighter individuals. This function only optimizes the recline feel and does not directly change the chair back angle.
Multi-Stage Locking and Special Features
- Multi-Position Locking: High-end ergonomic chairs (such as the JD Z5 Pro) support multi-angle locking. When reclining to a preset position, there will be a noticeable click, and releasing the handle will secure it. For example, the Z5 Pro offers three lumbar support modes, providing a snug fit when leaning back.
- Backrest Height Adjustment: Some chairs allow for height adjustment of the backrest by pulling it upward (after unlocking the locking mechanism) to accommodate the back support needs of different heights.
Precautions
- Stability First: Before adjusting, ensure the chair is on a stable surface to avoid falling due to imbalance when reclining.
- Compatibility with Older Models: Some older chairs may not have a locking function and require manual angle maintenance after reclining. It is recommended to refer to the product manual or contact after-sales service to confirm functionality.
- Ergonomic Fit: For ergonomic chairs like the Sihoo M90, the seat height range is typically 45-55cm, suitable for users with heights of 165-185cm. Components such as the chair back, lumbar support, and headrest can be further adjusted according to body type, and operation should be based on the manual.
If issues such as abnormal recline angles or locking failure persist after adjustment, it may be due to wear of the internal mechanical structure or a faulty gas lift. It is recommended to contact a professional repair technician for inspection and repair.
