Office Chair Reclining
The reclining of an office chair may be a design feature, or it may be due to improper adjustment or a malfunction, which can be resolved through adjustment or repair.

Purpose of the Reclining Design in Office Chairs
The reclining function of office chairs (including executive chairs) is designed to provide a comfortable sitting posture and facilitate easy adjustment. This function allows users to adjust the tilt angle of the chair according to their needs, enabling them to find the most comfortable sitting position, alleviate fatigue, and enhance work efficiency. It also enables users to adjust the chair angle based on their personal or work requirements, adapting to different scenarios. Moreover, it conforms to ergonomic principles, better fitting the user's body curves, providing superior support and comfort, and reflecting a human-centered design approach.
Adjustment Methods
- Adjustment Buttons or Handles: Many office chairs are equipped with adjustment buttons or handles on the sides or near the backrest. Pressing or pulling these devices will change the backrest angle. At this point, pushing the backrest forward will return it to the desired position. Although the design of buttons or handles may vary among different chairs, finding and operating them correctly will allow for backrest angle adjustment.
- Rotating Knobs: Some office chairs rely on rotating knobs on the backrest for adjustment. When the knob is turned, the backrest angle changes accordingly. Gently push the backrest while turning the knob to find a comfortable angle. This adjustment method is relatively intuitive, with the degree of backrest tilt controlled by the rotation amplitude of the knob.
- Gas Cylinder Adjustment: Some office chairs utilize a gas cylinder to adjust the backrest. Locate the gas cylinder adjustment device at the bottom or side of the chair and follow the instructions for operation. By controlling the rise and fall of the gas cylinder, the backrest angle can be changed, returning it to the normal position. However, when adjusting the gas cylinder, pay attention to the force and direction to avoid damaging the chair.
Repair Methods
If the backrest of an office chair cannot remain upright, it may be due to a problem with the hydraulic system. The backrest of the chair is adjusted through the extension and retraction of the hydraulic rod. If the hydraulic system fails, the backrest will not remain upright. You can try the following repair steps: Lay the chair on its side and inspect the transmission components starting from the backrest. If the chair's toggle is functioning properly but the hydraulic mechanism drops directly when pulled, check the fixing screws. For example, if the fixing screw at the pivot point is a non-standard 10*1 screw, it can be replaced with a standard size 10 screw. Install the screw in its original position, with a length of 30 millimeters (the original may be shorter). Ensure that the installation of the screw does not interfere with the range of motion of the hydraulic rod, which can be resolved by adding washers. If none of the above methods are applicable, refer to the office chair's instruction manual and follow the instructions provided. If the issue still cannot be resolved, you may need to contact the manufacturer's customer service or a professional repair technician for assistance.
