How to Recline an Office Chair

Admin October 12, 2026

The specific method for reclining an office chair varies depending on the chair type and design. Here are some common adjustment methods:

1. Lever Adjustment System Commonly found in mid-range and high-end office chairs, the adjustment lever is usually located on the right or left side beneath the seat. If the chair has a locking function, gently pull up or push the lever to release the lock. Then, slowly shift your body weight backward, allowing the chair back to tilt naturally with your weight. Once you reach a comfortable angle, operate the lever again to lock the position. Some chairs require continuous pressure on the lever to fix the angle; refer to the product manual for specific instructions.

2. Knob Adjustment System Often used in ergonomic chairs, the knob is typically located near the center of the seat base, close to the support column. Turning the knob clockwise increases the resistance of the chair back when reclining, suitable for users with a heavier weight or those needing stronger support; turning it counterclockwise reduces the resistance, making it easier for lighter users to recline. Some chairs have an independent knob to control the range of the recline angle, which needs to be adjusted step by step according to your needs. It is recommended to start with the minimum resistance for first-time use.

3. Pneumatic Adjustment System A common feature in modern office chairs, the pneumatic lever is usually integrated with the height adjustment lever. By pushing the lever forward or backward (the direction varies by design), you can achieve stepless adjustment of the recline angle. Maintain your body balance during operation to avoid sudden force that could cause the chair to become unstable. Some high-end models support segmented locking, allowing you to switch between multiple preset angles.

4. Special Adjustments for Executive Chairs The adjustment handle is usually located on the right side of the seat:

  • Angle Fixing: After sitting firmly, pull the handle to slowly lean back to the desired angle, then release the handle to lock it; repeat the operation and relax your back to return to an upright position.
  • Backrest Flattening: Controlled by a pull rod beneath the right armrest, some models require continuous pressure on the pull rod to adjust the angle.
  • Swinging Amplitude: Rotate the black cylinder (usually with anti-slip patterns) in front of the chair's gas cylinder to adjust the resistance of the forward and backward swing.

Safety Precautions

  • Ensure your feet are flat on the ground when adjusting to avoid tipping over due to a shifted center of gravity.
  • If the chair back frequently reclines automatically, immediately check if the gas cylinder is leaking or damaged. Low-quality gas cylinders may pose an explosion risk; it is recommended to replace products without safety certifications such as SGS or BIFMA.
  • After long-term use, regularly check the tightness of the screws to prevent loose components from affecting stability.
