Office Chair Recline Repair

Admin October 13, 2026

Repairing an office chair that reclines requires different methods depending on the specific issue. Common problems and repair steps are as follows:

For an office chair that leans to one side, it is usually caused by damaged or loose casters. To repair, invert the chair. Step 1: Check the caster status: Observe each wheel for breaks, deformation, or wear. If significant damage is found, replacement is necessary. Step 2: Remove the old casters: Use a screwdriver or wrench to loosen the fixing screws. If the wheels are stuck, a small amount of lubricant can be sprayed to assist in removal. Step 3: Install new casters: Apply a small amount of spray lubricant (such as WD-40) inside the chair base sockets. Align the new casters with the sockets and tap them in vertically. A rubber mallet can be used to ensure they are fully embedded. Step 4: Test stability: After placing the chair upright, push it to test and ensure all wheels touch the ground and there is no wobbling.

For the issue of the adjustable seat back not staying upright, it is often related to hydraulic system or transmission component failures. To repair, lay the chair on its side. Step 1: Check the transmission components: Starting from the connection between the backrest and the base, observe whether the hydraulic rod, toggle, and fixing screws are loose or damaged. If the hydraulic rod toggle is normal but the backrest drops directly when pulled, it may be a pivot fixing screw issue: The original screw may be a non-standard model and needs to be replaced with a standard No. 10 screw, with a recommended length of 30 millimeters. Step 2: Handle nut-bolt fit: If the gap between the new screw and the nut is too large, first thread a nut onto the bolt as a washer, then install the fixing screw to ensure the screw head does not interfere with the movement range of the hydraulic rod. Step 3: Add washers for adjustment: If the screw still affects the extension and retraction of the hydraulic rod after installation, add metal or plastic washers between the screw and the base. The thickness can be selected according to the gap size, usually 1-2 millimeters. Step 4: Function test: After adjustment, repeatedly pull the toggle to test the backrest locking function to ensure the backrest can remain stably upright.

During the repair process, note the following: Safety first. Wear gloves when operating to prevent cuts. Tool matching. Use a wrench or screwdriver that matches the screw specifications. Component compatibility. The new casters or screws should match the original models to avoid affecting the overall stability of the chair. If the problem is complex or involves internal hydraulic system leakage, it is recommended to contact professional repair personnel for handling.
