Office Chair Recline Repair

Admin October 12, 2026

Office chair recline repair can take targeted measures based on different fault causes, as follows:

1. Recline Function Locked

If the chair's recline function is not working, the lock button may be in the closed position. Locate the lock button at the bottom or side of the chair's backrest and pull it outward. Then, try leaning the backrest backward to see if the recline function is restored. This operation applies to cases where the function fails due to accidental activation of the locking mechanism.

2. Gas Cylinder Failure

The gas cylinder is the core component supporting the chair's recline. If it has cracks, deformation, or air leaks, it can result in weak or complete loss of recline function. Inspection Method: Squeeze the thin end of the gas cylinder and press down. If the cylinder easily retracts without any rebound resistance, it indicates insufficient internal pressure or damage to the cylinder, requiring replacement with a new one. Use specialized tools to remove the old cylinder and ensure the new one matches the chair's model.

3. Tilt Lock Damage

The tilt lock is a safety component that prevents accidental reclining of the chair. If its internal spring breaks or the lock body cracks, it can cause the recline function to fail. Inspection Steps: Observe the tilt lock's surface for cracks and gently push the lock body to test its flexibility. If damage is found, disassemble the chair's base and replace it with a tilt lock assembly of the same model, ensuring alignment of the lock holes and securing the screws during installation.

4. Loose Screws or Displaced Connectors

Prolonged use may cause the connecting screws of various chair components to loosen or the connectors of the base and backrest to shift. Repair Method: Use a screwdriver to check each screw at the bottom of the chair and where the backrest connects to the seat, tightening all loose screws. If any connectors are deformed, use a wrench to adjust them back to their original position or replace the parts.

5. Handle or Knob Adjustment Failure

Some chairs control the recline force through a handle and a knob on the base:

  • Handle Operation: Pulling the handle to the right unlocks the backrest, while pushing it to the left locks it. If the handle is loose or broken, adjust the nut position or replace the handle.
  • Knob Adjustment: The cylindrical knob on the base controls the rebound force. Turning it clockwise increases support, while turning it counterclockwise decreases it. If the knob fails, it may be due to worn internal gears, requiring replacement of the base assembly.

6. Wired Control Switch Failure (Chairs with Recline Function)

If the chair has a recline function and the adjustment fails, check the wired control switch:

  • Automatic Closure Issue: If the wired control switch is not closed, it may lock the function. Check if the wired control is loose, broken, or disconnected.
  • Repair Measures: Adjust the nut position of the wired control to restore the connection or replace it with a new wired control device, ensuring the wire is tightly connected to the base interface.

Repair Tips: Before operating, turn off the chair's gas cylinder lift function (if applicable) to avoid accidental popping. If replacing the gas cylinder, it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician to prevent safety hazards caused by high-pressure gas.
