Releasing the Lock on an Office Chair's Recline
Admin October 19, 2026
If the recline of an office chair is locked, you can release the lock and adjust the angle using the following methods, depending on the type of adjustment mechanism the chair has:

- Lever Adjustment System Most office chairs use a lever to control the recline lock function. The adjustment lever is usually located on the right or left side under the seat, and in some designs, it is at the connection between the backrest and the seat cushion. Steps:
- Maintain a sitting position and support your body weight with your feet to prevent the chair from sliding.
- After finding the adjustment lever, gently pull it up or push it forward (the specific direction varies by model) while slowly leaning back to feel the backrest loosen.
- If you need to lock the angle, after adjusting to a comfortable position, operate the lever again (such as pushing it back or pulling it down) to fix the current angle. Note: Some levers require continuous pressing or pulling for adjustment, so keep the action consistent during operation.
- Button Adjustment Mechanism Some chairs control the lock state with buttons, which are common in high-end or ergonomic chairs. Steps:
- Bend over and look under the seat or on the side of the backrest to find a round or square button (usually with a lock/unlock symbol).
- Pull the button outward (some need to be pressed before pulling), and the backrest can then recline freely.
- After adjusting to the appropriate angle, push the button back into place to lock the position. Tip: If the button does not respond, check if it is stuck due to long-term use. You can gently shake the backrest to assist in unlocking.
- Adjustment Handle Operation Some chairs are designed with an independent backrest adjustment handle, located in the center or on the right side under the seat. Steps:
- Push the handle inward (some models need to be pulled out) to test if the backrest becomes movable.
- If you need to adjust the angle, press the handle without releasing it and apply backward pressure with your back. The backrest will tilt with the pressure.
- After adjusting to the target angle, release the handle to lock it. Note: Keep your body balanced during operation to avoid losing balance due to a sudden recline.
- Adjustment Knob Control Some chairs control the recline function with a knob at the back of the seat. Steps:
- Sit on the chair and find the knob at the back under the seat (usually made of plastic or metal).
- Turn the knob (up or down) while applying a slight backward force with your back to feel the backrest loosen.
- After adjusting to the appropriate angle, release the knob to fix the position.
- If you need to return to an upright position, turn the knob again and slightly lean forward, and the backrest will automatically spring back.
If the above methods do not work, it is recommended to check if the chair has mechanical part wear or sticking due to long-term use. You can contact after-sales service for repair or refer to the product manual for in-depth debugging.
