Office Chair Recline Lock

Admin October 16, 2026

If your office chair is locked in the recline position, you can try the following methods to resolve the issue:

Adjust the Adjustment Handle or Lever

  • Adjustment Handle: There is usually a handle under the chair specifically for adjusting the backrest. If the chair is locked in the recline position, first push the handle in to see if the lock can be released. If it still doesn't work properly after pushing, the spring may be damaged, and you can consider replacing a support bracket. To adjust the recline angle of the backrest, press the handle down and hold it while applying backward pressure with your back. Release the handle when you reach the desired angle.
  • Adjustment Lever: Sit on the chair and find the adjustment lever at the back under the seat. Pull the lever while applying a slight backward force with your back, then release the lever. The backrest should now be fixed at the corresponding angle. To restore the backrest to its original position, pull the lever again and apply a bit of force with your back, and the backrest will spring back.

Replace the Seat Base or Release the Function Lock

  • Replace the Seat Base: If the chair is equipped with an adjustment lever, first put the chair in the recline position and then reset the lever to lock it. To move the backrest back to its original position, simply move the adjustment lever.
  • Release the Function Lock: Some chairs have a button. If the recline function is locked, pull the button outwards, then lean the backrest back to release the lock.

Operate According to Different Locking Methods

  • Knob Type: Find the round knob under the chair and increase the backrest resistance by turning it clockwise until you reach the desired recline angle and it locks.
  • Lever Type: Find the lever on the side or under the chair and move it to a specific position, such as the "lock" mark, to fix the backrest.
  • Button Type: Press the dedicated button to lock the backrest's recline angle.

Contact the Seller or Manufacturer

If none of the above methods solve the problem and the chair is still within the warranty period (good computer chairs usually have a relatively long warranty period of up to three to five years), you can contact the seller or manufacturer from whom you purchased the chair and request phone guidance for repairs. If phone guidance is not possible due to technical or tool limitations and the chair is still under warranty, the cost of sending it back for repair is usually borne by the seller or manufacturer.
