Office Chair Recline Lock

Admin October 12, 2026

The following are solutions to issues related to the recline lock of office chairs:

General Solutions for Recline Lock Failure

If the backrest of an office chair cannot recline, it is likely that the locking mechanism needs adjustment. In most cases, a handle can be found on the right side of the chair. Pushing it to the left locks the backrest, and pulling it to the right unlocks it. Additionally, there is usually a cylindrical knob on the base. Turning it clockwise increases the rebound support force, while turning it counterclockwise decreases it. By properly operating the handle and knob, issues with recline failure caused by the locking mechanism can be resolved.

Special Adjustment Methods for Reclining Chairs

For office chairs that can recline flat, if the backrest cannot be adjusted, first check whether the cable-controlled switch has automatically closed. If it has not closed, there may be issues such as looseness, breakage, or disengagement of the cable control. In this case, try reattaching the terminal of the cable control to see if the problem can be solved. Additionally, the small gas cylinder connecting the backrest should be thoroughly inspected. If the small gas cylinder is out of gas, the backrest will not be able to be adjusted normally, and in this case, the small gas cylinder needs to be replaced.

Location of the Recline Lock

The location of the recline lock on computer chairs varies depending on the model and brand. On many computer chairs, the recline angle locking device is located beneath the seat, usually a rod that can be moved up and down. Moving it up unlocks the backrest, and moving it down locks it. Some high-end or specially designed computer chairs place the recline lock on the side of the armrests, which can be operated via buttons or knobs to lock or unlock the backrest. There are also computer chairs that have the recline lock at the back of the seat, usually a control knob. Rotating this knob can complete the locking and unlocking operations.

Solutions for a Locked Recline Function

Some chairs fail to recline because the function is locked, for example, when a certain button is in the locked position. In this case, simply pull the button outward and then lean the backrest backward to release the lock and restore the chair's normal recline function.
