Office Chair Recline Knob

Admin October 14, 2026

The adjustment methods for office chair recline knobs vary depending on the design type, mainly falling into three categories: mechanical knob type, common office chair knob type, and ergonomic chair knob type. Here are the specific adjustment methods:

Mechanical Knob Adjustment (Classic Model)

Taking high-end classic models like the Steelcase Gesture as an example, they feature a patented dual-knob design, usually located on the left side of the chair back. The adjustment requires two steps:

  1. Adjust the sitting posture reference: First, push the seat cushion forward so that the legs are naturally bent at a 90-degree angle, ensuring that the angle between the knees and hips is approximately 110 degrees. This is the recommended sitting posture reference in ergonomics.
  2. Rotate the knob to adjust the angle: By rotating the metal knob clockwise 1-3 times, you can achieve an infinite recline angle adjustment from 15ยฐ to 135ยฐ. The green marking line on the knob's dial corresponds to the optimal recline angle of 135 degrees, which can disperse spinal pressure and is suitable for long hours of office work or short breaks.

Common Office Chair Knob Adjustment

For most ordinary office chairs, the knob is usually located on the right side under the seat, circular or oval in shape, with an adjustment logic of 'unlock-adjust-lock':

  1. Unlock the recline function: Rotate the knob counterclockwise to unlock the recline angle, allowing the chair back to recline freely.
  2. Fix the recline angle: After adjusting to the desired angle, rotate the knob clockwise to lock it, preventing angle changes during use.
  3. Adjust the recline resistance (some models): Some knobs control the recline resistance through tightness. Rotating the knob clockwise increases the resistance (suitable for heavier individuals), while rotating it counterclockwise reduces the resistance (making it easier to recline).

Ergonomic Chair Knob Adjustment

The knob on ergonomic chairs is usually located at the center of the seat bottom, focusing on resistance adjustment to accommodate users of different weights:

  1. Increase the recline resistance: Rotating the knob clockwise increases the recline resistance, suitable for heavier users or those who need stable support to prevent rapid reclining and imbalance.
  2. Reduce the recline resistance: Rotating the knob counterclockwise reduces the resistance, making the chair back easier to recline, suitable for lighter users or those who prefer flexible reclining.

Precautions:

  • Before adjustment, ensure that the chair is in a stable state to avoid tipping over during the process.
  • Some models may require simultaneous adjustment of the seat height or chair back height to achieve optimal comfort in conjunction with the recline angle.
  • If the knob adjustment is ineffective, it may be due to a malfunction in the internal mechanical structure, and you should contact after-sales service for repair.
