Office Chair Recline Issue

Admin October 10, 2026

The issue of an office chair not reclining properly can be resolved through the following methods:

Unlock the Recline Function

The recline function of some office chairs may be locked, preventing normal reclining. Locate the adjustment button or handle beneath or on the right side of the seat, and pull it outward or gently lift it to unlock. For example, high-end ergonomic chairs typically control the recline function through a lever system; pulling up the lever releases the recline lock. If the chair is equipped with a locking switch, check whether the switch is in the on position, as some switches may shift due to accidental touches or prolonged use.

Adjust the Recline Resistance

If the resistance when reclining is too high or too low, adjust it using the cylindrical knob on the base. Turning the knob clockwise increases resistance, suitable for users who are heavier or require stronger support; turning it counterclockwise decreases resistance, suitable for users who are lighter or prefer easier reclining. Adjust gradually and test the recline effect to avoid imbalance caused by excessive adjustment at once. Some chairs may have an independent tension adjustment knob; refer to the product manual to locate the specific adjustment position.

Check the Type of Adjustment Mechanism

Different chairs have varying recline adjustment mechanisms, requiring targeted handling based on the type:

  • Lever Adjustment System: Locate the lever beneath the seat, pull it up or push it to adjust the recline angle; some chairs require another operation of the lever to lock the position.
  • Knob Adjustment System: Locate the knob beneath the seat; some knobs can adjust the recline angle or tension independently, and operation should be based on the markings or manual.
  • Pneumatic Adjustment System: Achieve smooth recline control by pushing the height adjustment lever in different directions (e.g., pushing forward to lower the height, pushing backward to recline).

Restore the Upright Position

If the chair is stuck in the reclined position and cannot be reset, pull the control lever outward and gently push the backrest, then push the control lever back to lock it in the upright position. Ensure the chair is on a stable surface during this operation to avoid tipping over due to excessive force.

Precautions: Keep the chair's center of gravity stable during adjustment and avoid operating it in a tilted position. If the issue persists, check whether the hydraulic rod is leaking oil or if the screws are loose, and contact a professional repair technician to replace parts if necessary. After prolonged use, the internal parts of the base may wear out; regularly clean and lubricate the adjustment mechanism to extend its service life.
