Office Chair Recline Issue

Admin October 09, 2026

The backrest of an office chair cannot recline (lean back). This issue can usually be resolved through three steps: checking the operation, correcting the position, and cleaning and maintaining the chair. In rare cases, core components may need to be repaired. Details are as follows:

1. Check and Operate the Adjustment Mechanism Correctly

Almost all office chairs that can recline are equipped with adjustment handles or buttons, typically located on the right side under the seat, on the side, or inside the armrests.

  • Lever-type handle: Pull the handle while applying slight backward pressure with your back, then release the handle to fix the angle. To straighten the backrest, pull the handle again and lean forward with assistance.
  • Independent locking button (common on multifunctional chairs): Pulling the button outward usually unlocks the recline function, while pushing it inward locks it (at this point, only height adjustment is possible). Key Point: Before operating, ensure the mechanism is in the โ€œunlockedโ€ state to avoid being unable to recline due to accidental locking.

2. Check the Alignment of the Control Lever and Pivot Hole

If the backrest gets stuck at a certain angle and cannot reset or locks completely after operating the handle, it may be because the control lever is not correctly inserted into the pivot hole of the backrest. This is typically manifested by the control lever resetting below or to the side of the pivot hole after the backrest reclines, causing the mechanical structure to jam. Solution:

  1. Do not force the lever to avoid damaging components.
  2. Fully pull out the control lever and use your hand to assist in pushing the backrest back to an upright position.
  3. Reinsert the control lever accurately into the pivot hole. A โ€œclickโ€ sound or the feeling of it being fully inserted indicates successful alignment.

3. Clean and Lubricate the Recline Mechanism

If the mechanism operates stiffly, makes unusual noises, or jams, it may be due to the accumulation of dust, hair, or a lack of lubrication. The recline mechanism is usually located at the connection between the seat and the backrest, consisting of metal levers, sliders, or rotating shafts. Operation Guide:

  1. Use a dry cloth or brush to clean visible dust and prevent further accumulation of dirt.
  2. Apply a specialized mechanical lubricant (such as WD-40) to the moving joints, rotating shafts, and sliding rails.
  3. Operate the recline function several times repeatedly to allow the lubricant to fully penetrate and improve smoothness.

Rare Cases: If the above steps are ineffective, it may indicate damage to core mechanical components such as springs,ๆ‹จ็‰‡ (Note: โ€œๆ‹จ็‰‡โ€ here may be a specific term; if it refers to a โ€œtoggleโ€ or similar component, you can replace it accordingly, e.g., โ€œtoggleโ€), or the hydraulic system. In such cases, contact a professional repair technician for replacement or repair.
