Office Chair Recline Function

Admin October 16, 2026

The recline function of office chairs is achieved through different adjustment mechanisms, meeting diverse needs such as work and relaxation. Attention should be paid to balance and health issues when using it.

Adjustment Mechanisms

There are three main adjustment mechanisms for the recline function of office chairs. The lever adjustment system is commonly found in mid-range and high-end office chairs. The adjustment lever is usually located on the right or left side beneath the seat. For chairs with a locking function, you need to pull up or push the lever to unlock it first, then adjust your body weight to lean back and adjust the lever to a comfortable angle. For chairs with a locking function, operate the lever again to lock the position after adjustment. The knob adjustment system is mostly used in ergonomic chairs. The knob is generally located near the central part of the lower seat close to the support column. Rotating it clockwise usually increases the backrest's recoil resistance, while rotating it counterclockwise decreases it. Some chairs have a separate knob for adjusting the recline angle. Refer to the product manual for details. The pneumatic adjustment system is used in some modern office chairs. The pneumatic lever is arranged together with the height adjustment lever. You can adjust the recline by pushing it in different directions, providing a smooth adjustment experience. Gently pull the lever to adjust the backrest angle when using it.

Adjustment Steps

The adjustment steps vary for different chairs. For some chairs, you need to first find the handle on the right side and gently pull it to unlock the backrest. Then, adjust the cylindrical knob on the chassis. Turning it clockwise enhances the backrest's recoil support force, while turning it counterclockwise weakens it. Pull out the control lever on the right side of the seat cushion to recline freely. Find a suitable angle and gently push it to lock. To return to an upright position, pull the control lever outward to give a push to your back to make the chair upright, and then push the control lever back in to lock it.

Suggestions for Selecting Recline Angles

Choose an appropriate recline angle according to different scenarios. When focusing on work, select a smaller recline angle to maintain a vertical or slightly forward-leaning posture. When relaxing and thinking, choose a larger recline angle for a comfortable lying position. For short breaks, appropriate reclining can relax the back muscles and promote blood circulation. For example, the Qingxian Pro office chair has five-level adjustments. For focused work, adjust it to the 105-degree upright sitting position. For writing or editing, adjust it to 125 degrees. For lunch breaks, pull it to the 160-degree extreme recline angle and use it with a footrest to turn it into a nap bed.

Precautions

When adjusting the recline angle, ensure that the chair's center of gravity is not too far back to prevent tipping over and ensure balance and stability. An inappropriate recline angle may affect your health, so choose it reasonably.
