Office Chair Recline Failure

Admin October 10, 2026

Office chair recline failure is usually caused by setup or operational issues and can be resolved through targeted adjustments. Here are the specific methods:

  1. Check the Function Locking Mechanism Some chairs may have their recline function physically locked, controlled by buttons or levers. Observe near the backrest or base for any locking indicators (such as 'Lock'). If present, attempt to unlock it:
  • Button-type: Pull out the button or press the unlock key outward;
  • Lever-type: Adjust the lever position to the 'Unlock' state (usually marked as 'Unlock'). After unlocking, gently push the backrest to test if the recline function is restored.
  1. Confirm the Operation Method of Adjustment Components If the chair controls recline through side handles, knobs, or bottom levers, ensure correct operation:
  • Lever-type: Step on or pull up the lever while slowly leaning back with your back, adjust to the desired angle, and then release the lock;
  • Knob-type: Rotate the knob to adjust the recline range or tension (some knobs require clockwise/counterclockwise rotation to activate the function). Maintain smooth movements during operation to avoid incomplete activation of components due to insufficient force.
  1. Turn Off the Tilt Lock Function Some chairs are equipped with a 'Lock Tilt Angle' function. When enabled, the backrest will be fixed and unable to recline. Check near the adjustment lever for any locking indicators:
  • If the indicator is 'Lock/Unlock', move the toggle to the 'Unlock' position;
  • If the indicator is numerical scales (such as 1-5 gears), try adjusting to a lower gear to release the lock.
  1. Adjust Tension Settings Chairs with tension adjustment (controlled by knobs or dials) may have excessive resistance, making it difficult for lighter individuals to push the backrest. Rotate the tension knob to reduce resistance:
  • Clockwise rotation usually increases resistance, while counterclockwise rotation decreases it;
  • After adjustment, gently push the backrest to test and ensure the resistance matches your weight.
  1. Clear Component Stuckness Dust accumulation or insufficient lubrication at the adjustment lever springs or pivot points may cause mechanical stuckness. Check the following parts:
  • Pivot points: Wipe away dust with a soft cloth and spray a small amount of lubricant (such as WD-40);
  • Adjustment lever: Pull or rotate repeatedly to observe if flexibility is restored.
  1. Handle Accidental Control Lever Reset (for Fixed Hole Design) If the backrest cannot automatically reset after reclining, it may be due to the control lever being pushed into a fixed hole, causing a lock. You need to:
  • Pull out the control lever again to return the backrest to its original position;
  • Push it back into the fixed hole and lock it, then test if the recline function is normal.

Special Case (Sihoo M18 Model): For this model of chair, when the recline function fails, try adjusting your sitting posture:

  • Recline failure: Move your buttocks forward until you hear a 'click', and then the backrest can recline;
  • Backrest won't retract: Similarly, move your sitting posture forward and apply force to reset the locking mechanism.

If none of the above methods work, it is recommended to contact the manufacturer's after-sales service or a professional repair technician to inspect the internal mechanical structure (such as spring breakage or gas rod damage).
