Office Chair Recline Angle Adjustment
The recline angle adjustment of an office chair should be made scientifically according to the usage scenario, and appropriate adjustment methods and operating steps should be selected while paying attention to avoiding health risks.

Scientific Angle Adjustment
According to national standards, the original reference angle (the angle between the backrest and the seat surface) of an office chair should be between 90ยฐ and 95ยฐ. For focused work, a range of 90ยฐ-110ยฐ is recommended, as this angle helps maintain the natural curve of the spine and reduces pressure on the lower back. For lunch breaks or relaxation scenarios, it is advisable to adjust to 110ยฐ-130ยฐ, which helps distribute body weight by reclining and relieves muscle fatigue. Some ergonomic chairs also support a forward-tilt function, typically with an angle range of 5ยฐ to 15ยฐ, suitable for scenarios such as desk writing or detailed operations, providing lumbar support while maintaining a natural forward tilt of the torso.
Common Adjustment Methods
- Lever-type: A control lever is usually located beneath the seat. By pulling or pushing it and then leaning back, the angle of the backrest can be changed and automatically locked when released. This method is simple to operate and suitable for most basic office chairs.
- Knob-type: Located on the side or rear of the chair, the knob is used to adjust the tightness of the gas spring, controlling the reclining resistance or locking angle. The resistance should be adjusted according to body weight to prevent excessive reclining speed due to looseness.
- Electric-type: High-end models are equipped with buttons or control panels that allow for infinite angle adjustment. Some also support preset commonly used angles, suitable for users with high comfort requirements.
Operating Steps
- Reclining Adjustment: After sitting firmly, locate the adjustment handle, pull it and lean back, then release the handle to fix the angle. To return to the original position, pull the handle again and gently apply force to make the backrest spring back.
- Forward-tilt Adjustment: Activate the adjustment mechanism on the right side or beneath the seat cushion, adjust the forward-tilt angle and lock it. This should be coordinated with parameters such as seat height and lumbar support position to ensure balanced support for all body parts.
Precautions
- Avoid Excessive Reclining Angles: Reclining beyond 130ยฐ may increase pressure on the cervical spine, obstruct breathing, and even cause dizziness or the risk of falling.
- Use the Forward-tilt Function Dynamically: Although it can relieve static back load, maintaining a single posture for a long time can still cause muscle fatigue. It is recommended to adjust your sitting posture or take short breaks every 30 minutes.
- Regularly Check the Adjustment Mechanism: If there is any stuttering, looseness, or inability to lock, timely repair or replacement of parts is necessary to ensure safety during use.
