Office Chair Recline Adjustment
The recline adjustment of an office chair requires selecting an appropriate angle based on the scenario and locking it in place using a specific method, while also being mindful of the health hazards posed by improper angles.

According to the national standard 'Ergonomic Requirements for Healthy Homes - Part 3: Office Desks and Chairs', the original reference angle (the angle between the backrest and the seat) of an office chair should be between 90ยฐ and 95ยฐ. In actual use, the recommended angles vary depending on the scenario: when focusing on work, an angle of 90ยฐ - 110ยฐ between the backrest and the seat is recommended, as this angle helps maintain a relatively upright sitting posture, aids in concentration, and improves work efficiency; during lunch breaks or relaxation, the angle can be adjusted to 110ยฐ - 130ยฐ, allowing for better body stretching and fatigue relief.
There are three common recline adjustment methods:
- Lever-type: There is usually a lever under the seat. By pulling or pushing it, the body can lean back to change the backrest angle, and it locks in place when released. For example, with an executive chair, find the adjuster under the chair, pull it up while applying backward force with your back until the desired recline is achieved, and then release your hand.
- Knob-type: Commonly found on the side or back of the chair, the tightness of the gas spring is adjusted by rotating the knob, thereby controlling the resistance to leaning back or locking the angle.
- Electric-type: Some high-end office chairs use an electric system, enabling precise and stepless angle adjustment through buttons and a control panel.
To lock the backrest at a specific angle, follow these steps: First, locate the adjustment lever or knob under the seat and operate it (e.g., gently pull up the lever) to release the lock; then, slowly lean your body backward to guide the backrest to a comfortable angle; finally, operate the same adjustment device again (e.g., push the lever back into place or tighten the knob) to complete the locking.
When adjusting the recline, be aware that improper angles, especially excessive backward lean, can pose health hazards, such as cervical spine strain, breathing difficulties, and impaired cerebral blood supply. An excessively large backward lean angle (e.g., over 120ยฐ) is also not suitable for work needs and can significantly reduce concentration.
