Office Chair Recline Adjustment

Admin October 09, 2026

The adjustment of the recline function of an office chair should be carried out according to the model, with core steps including unlocking, angle adjustment, locking, and resistance adaptation. The specific operations are as follows:

I. Basic Adjustment Steps

  1. Unlock the Recline Function
The adjustment handle of most office chairs is located on the right side of the seat (a few on the left), and its forms include levers, knobs, or pull rods. Sit up straight and gently pull the handle. You will hear a 'click' sound indicating that the lock has been released. If the chair is equipped with an independent recline lock (such as high-end models), you need to first pull up the locking switch located under the seat.
  2. Adjust the Recline Angle
Slowly lean back while continuously pulling the handle, and the backrest will gradually recline with the pressure. Release the handle when you reach a comfortable angle, and the backrest will automatically lock.
  • Mechanical Knob Type: Rotate the knob on the base (usually marked with arrow directions) to control the angle. You need to manually test the tightness.
  • Gas Cylinder Linkage Type: Adjust the angle through the body's center of gravity. Some models support the simultaneous recline of the armrests (such as the one-button synchronization design of the Sihoo M1).
  • Smart Touch Type: Set the angle through the buttons on the backrest or an APP. Some models can remember commonly used preferences.
  1. Return to the Upright Position
Pull the handle or knob again, and the backrest will rebound to its initial position with the assistance of the gas device.

II. Recline Resistance Adjustment

  1. Adapt According to Body Weight
  • For those with a heavy body weight: Increase the resistance to prevent uncontrolled falling when reclining.
  • For those with a light body weight: Decrease the resistance to ensure easy reclining without much effort.
  1. Adapt According to the Scenario
  • For slight recline during office work: The resistance should be slightly higher to maintain natural support.
  • For relaxation during breaks: The resistance should be slightly lower to enhance comfort.
  1. Adjustment Methods
  • Mechanical Knob Type: Rotate the black cylinder at the front end of the gas rod. Turning it clockwise increases the resistance, and turning it counterclockwise decreases it.
  • Gas Cylinder Linkage Type: Some models are adjusted through the knob on the base. Refer to the instruction manual.

III. Adjustment Examples for Different Brands

  1. Herman Miller
The recline resistance adjustment knob is located under the chair, with the '-' sign indicating the direction to decrease the resistance. The recline angle switch needs to be located according to the model, usually located at the bottom or side of the seat.
  2. Boss Chair
Find the adjuster under the chair, pull it up while applying force to the back, and continue to apply force until the desired inclination is reached, then release your hand.

IV. Precautions

  1. Avoid sudden force when reclining to prevent the gas rod from losing control.
  2. Regularly check whether the adjustment components (such as mechanical knobs) are loose, especially in high-frequency usage scenarios.
  3. Long-term large-angle recline of leather seats may accelerate material aging. It is recommended to control the frequency of reclining.
  4. If you need adjustment instructions for a specific model, first check the label on the bottom of the chair or the brand's instruction manual, as different brands may have design details that vary.
