Office Chair Recline Adjustment

Admin October 09, 2026

The methods for adjusting the recline of an office chair vary depending on the type, with common adjustment methods as follows:

1. Pneumatic Rod Adjustment Type
This type of chair usually has an adjustment lever located beneath the seat. To adjust, the person should first sit on the chair and pull the adjustment lever upward with their hand. At this point, the body can lean backward, and the backrest will tilt synchronously with the body's movement to a suitable angle. The angle automatically locks when the lever is released. To return to an upright position, pull the lever upward again, sit forward with the body, and the backrest will reset. The key to operation is to keep the body movement synchronized with the backrest tilt when pulling the lever to avoid adjustment failure due to uneven force.

2. Knob Adjustment Type
The knob is generally located on the side or bottom of the chair. When turned clockwise, the tension of the backrest increases, and the angle gradually locks. When turned counterclockwise, the backrest relaxes, and the person can rely on their own strength to tilt the backrest backward to the desired angle. This type of adjustment requires controlling the backrest resistance through the tightness of the knob, suitable for users who need fine adjustment of the recline force. However, be careful not to over-loosen the knob, which may cause the backrest to suddenly recline backward.

3. Handle Adjustment Type
Some chairs have a handle on the outer side of the seat. When the handle is pulled upward, the backrest unlocks and can tilt backward; when pulled downward, the backrest moves forward to its original position. Ensure that the handle is fully pulled into place during operation, as failure to fully unlock may cause the backrest to get stuck or be unable to adjust.

4. Lever Adjustment Type
The adjustment lever is mostly located on the right side of the chair, beneath the seat cushion, or on the side of the armrest. To unlock the recline, pull the lever outward or upward, and the chair back enters a free recline state, allowing you to lean back slowly with the strength of your back; after adjusting to a comfortable angle, release the lever, and the chair back automatically locks. To reset, pull the lever again and relax your back, and the chair back will bounce back. Some high-end models are equipped with an independent recline adjustment lever, and the operation logic needs to be distinguished.

5. Multi-Stage Locking Type
Common in high-end models such as ergonomic chairs, supporting multi-angle locking. When reclining to a preset gear position, there will be a noticeable click, and the position will lock when the hand is released. When adjusting, lean back slowly to sense the gear positions to avoid missing the target angle due to rapid reclining.

If the backrest cannot automatically reset and lock after reclining backward, the control rod may have been accidentally pushed into the fixing hole. In this case, pull the control rod out to return the backrest to its original position, and then push it back into the fixing hole to restore functionality. It is recommended to check the chair's instruction manual before adjustment to avoid damaging components due to improper operation.
