Office Chair Recline Adjustment

Admin October 09, 2026

Office chair recline adjustment requires selecting the appropriate method based on the chair type and usage scenario. The specific operations and precautions are as follows:

I. Common Adjustment Methods

  1. Lever-type
There is usually an adjustment lever under the seat. After pulling it up or pushing it down, lean back to change the backrest angle, and it will automatically lock when released. This method is simple to operate and suitable for most basic office chairs.

  2. Knob-type
The knob is mostly located on the side or back of the chair. By rotating it, you can adjust the tightness of the gas spring: turning it clockwise tightens it to increase the backward resistance or lock the angle, while turning it counterclockwise loosens it to reduce the resistance. This method is suitable for users who need fine control over the backward force.

  3. Electric-type
High-end office chairs are equipped with buttons or control panels, enabling precise and stepless angle adjustment. Some models also support preset common angles. These chairs need to be connected to a power source and are suitable for scenarios with high comfort requirements.

II. Scenario-based Adjustment Recommendations

  1. Focused work (e.g., typing)
Adjust the backrest to 90ยฐ-100ยฐ, keep the body leaning forward and the eyes focused on the screen to reduce neck and shoulder fatigue.

  2. Reading or thinking
Widen the angle to 100ยฐ-110ยฐ to provide back support, relax the body and mind, and avoid excessive backward leaning that may cause the line of sight to deviate from the materials.

  3. Lunch break or short rest
Adjust to 110ยฐ-130ยฐ, close to a semi-reclining position. Using a U-shaped pillow and lumbar support can enhance comfort. Note: Excessive backward leaning (e.g., over 120ยฐ) can increase cervical spine pressure, compress the chest cavity, causing breathing difficulties, and affect blood supply to the brain.

III. Angle Locking Operation

  1. Find the adjustment lever or knob under the seat and operate it (e.g., pull up the lever) to release the lock.
  2. Slowly lean back to a comfortable angle and operate the adjustment device again (e.g., push back the lever or tighten the knob) to lock it.

IV. Precautions

  1. Ensure the ground is level before adjustment to avoid abnormal functioning of the tilting function due to an uneven surface.
  2. If the chair's tilting function fails, check whether the gas spring or locking mechanism is damaged. Contact after-sales service for repair if necessary.
  3. According to the national standard Ergonomic Requirements for Healthy Homes - Part 3: Office Desks and Chairs, the original reference angle (the angle between the backrest and the seat surface) of an office chair should be 90ยฐ to 95ยฐ, and it can be flexibly adjusted according to actual needs during use.

V. Adjustment for Special Types

  1. Executive chair
Find the adjuster under the chair, pull it up while exerting backward force with your back, and release your hand after adjusting to the appropriate angle.

  2. Ergonomic chair
Adjust the tilting tension (turn the knob clockwise) to adapt to body weight, or use the tilting lock to fix the position. Some models also support independent adjustment of the lumbar support and headrest angles.
