Office Chair Recline Adjustment
Admin October 22, 2026
Office chair recline adjustment requires selecting the appropriate method based on the chair's style. Here are the specific steps:

I. Basic Adjustment Steps
- Unlock the Recline Function Most chairs have an adjustment handle on the right side of the seat (a few on the left), which can be in the form of a lever, knob, or pull rod. Sit up straight and gently pull the handle; you'll hear a 'click' sound indicating the lock has been released. If the chair is equipped with an independent recline lock (such as high-end models), you need to first pull up the locking switch under the seat.
- Adjust the Recline Angle Slowly lean back while continuously pulling the handle, and the backrest will gradually recline with the pressure. Release the handle when you reach a comfortable angle, and it will automatically lock.
- Mechanical Knob Type: Rotate the knob on the base (usually marked with arrow directions) to control the angle; you need to manually test the tightness.
- Gas Cylinder Linkage Type: Adjust the angle through your body's center of gravity. Some high-end models support armrests reclining synchronously (such as the one-click synchronization design of the Sihoo M1).
- Smart Touch Type: Set the angle through buttons on the backrest or an app; some models can remember your preferred settings.
- Return to the Upright Position Pull the handle or knob again, and the backrest will bounce back to its initial position with the assistance of the gas device.
II. Recline Resistance Adjustment
- Adjust According to Body Weight
- For heavier individuals: Increase the resistance to avoid an excessive sinking feeling when reclining.
- For lighter individuals: Decrease the resistance to ensure easy reclining without much effort.
- Adjust According to Usage Scenarios
- For slight reclining during office work: Keep the resistance slightly higher to maintain a natural supporting state.
- Adjustment method: Rotate the black cylinder at the front end of the gas rod clockwise to increase the resistance (suitable for heavier individuals) and counterclockwise to decrease it. For Herman Miller ergonomic chairs, rotate the knob at the bottom; the direction marked with a 'minus' sign decreases the resistance.
III. Other Adjustment Methods
Some chairs are equipped with an adjuster under the seat. The operation steps are as follows:
- Pull the adjuster upward while applying force to your back to tilt the backrest.
- Continue applying force and adjust to a suitable angle, then release the adjuster to fix it.
IV. Precautions
- Avoid sudden force when reclining to prevent the gas rod from losing control.
- Regularly check whether the adjustment components (especially mechanical knobs) are loose to ensure safety.
- Long-term large-angle reclining of leather seats may accelerate material aging, so control the usage frequency.
- Different brands have different designs. If you need adjustment instructions for a specific model, it is recommended to check the label on the bottom of the chair or the brand's manual.
