Adjusting the Recline of an Office Chair
Admin October 12, 2026
The method for adjusting the recline of an office chair depends on the type of chair. Here are the common adjustment systems and steps:

I. Lever Adjustment System
Steps:
- Locate the adjustment lever: It is usually located on the right or left side under the seat. For some chairs, you may need to bend down and feel along the bottom edge of the seat to find it.
- Unlock (if applicable): If the chair is equipped with a locking function (such as some office swivel chairs), you need to pull up or push the lever to unlock it first. Otherwise, the backrest will not move when you lean back.
- Adjust the recline angle: Pull the lever and slowly lean back your body. The backrest will tilt according to the force applied by your body. After adjusting to a comfortable angle, release the lever, and the backrest will be fixed in the current position.
- Return to an upright position: Pull the lever again and sit up straight forward. The backrest will automatically bounce back to its original position.
Suitable scenarios: Commonly found in basic office chairs. The operation is simple and suitable for users who need to frequently adjust their sitting posture.
II. Knob Adjustment System
Steps:
- Locate the knob: It is mostly located in the center or on the side under the seat. Some designs are hidden, and you need to feel along the bottom edge of the seat to find it.
- Adjust the recline resistance: Turning the knob clockwise usually increases the recline resistance (suitable for heavier people), and turning it counterclockwise reduces the resistance (suitable for lighter people or scenarios where you want to lean back easily).
- Test the angle: For some chairs, you need to rotate the knob while leaning back to test and adjust until you find a comfortable resistance value. After adjustment, sit up straight to feel whether the rebound force of the backrest is appropriate.
Suitable scenarios: Commonly found in mid-to-high-end office chairs that require fine adjustment of the recline resistance. Suitable for users with high requirements for sitting comfort.
III. Pneumatic Rod Adjustment System
Steps:
- Locate the adjustment rod: It is located in the center under the chair and is usually the same component as the seat height adjustment rod (some chairs have a dual-control rod design).
- Adjust the recline: Pull up the adjustment rod while slowly leaning back your body. After the backrest tilts to the target angle, release the adjustment rod to fix it.
- Distinguish the function rods: If the chair has dual control rods, the other rod is used to adjust the seat height (pull up to raise the seat and press down to lower it).
Suitable scenarios: Commonly found in pneumatic lift office chairs. The operation requires synchronous coordination between the body and the adjustment rod.
IV. Handle Adjustment Type
Steps:
- Locate the handle: It is located on the outside of the seat (usually on the right side). Some designs are retractable or hidden.
- Adjust the recline: Pulling up the handle unlocks the backrest recline function. Lean back your body to the target angle; pulling down the handle returns it to an upright position.
Suitable scenarios: Commonly found in office chairs with side handle designs. The operation is intuitive and suitable for quickly adjusting the sitting posture.
Precautions
- Safe operation: Before adjustment, ensure that the chair is placed on a flat surface and that you are sitting steadily. Avoid tipping over due to an uneven surface or excessive force.
- Stability check: If the chair reclines too quickly or is unstable, check whether the pneumatic rod is leaking oil, whether the screws are loose, or whether the adjustment handle is damaged.
- Angle selection: When focusing on work, it is recommended to have a small recline angle (about 10ยฐ - 15ยฐ). When relaxing and thinking, you can increase the angle (about 20ยฐ - 30ยฐ).
