Adjusting Office Chair to Recline

Admin October 11, 2026

The method of adjusting an office chair to recline varies depending on the adjustment mechanism. Here are the common types and their operating steps:

I. Lever Adjustment System

  1. Locate the adjustment lever: Usually positioned on the right or left side beneath the seat. For some chairs, you may need to bend down or flip the seat to find it.
  2. Release the lock (if applicable): If the chair has a locking function, first gently pull or push the lever (e.g., lift upwards or push forwards) to release the fixed state.
  3. Adjust the recline angle: Slowly lean your body backwards while operating the lever (e.g., move it up and down or push and pull it back and forth) to bring the backrest to a comfortable angle.
  4. Re-lock: Once adjusted to the desired position, operate the lever again (e.g., press down or pull back) to secure it in place, ensuring safety during use.

II. Knob Adjustment System

  1. Locate the knob: Typically found near the center of the lower part of the seat, close to the support column. Some ergonomic chairs may have a separate knob.
  2. Adjust the recline resistance:
    • Clockwise rotation: Increases the resistance of the backrest when reclining, suitable for heavier individuals to prevent sudden drops when reclining.
    • Counter-clockwise rotation: Reduces the resistance, making it easier for lighter individuals to recline.
  3. Adjust the recline angle (if applicable): Some chairs require another knob to control the angle range. Refer to the product manual for operation.

III. Pneumatic Adjustment System

  1. Identify the pneumatic lever: Usually shared with the height adjustment lever, with different directions of pushing to distinguish functions.
  2. Unlock and adjust: Gently pull the lever and lean your body backwards. The backrest will smoothly recline to the target angle.
  3. Secure the position: After releasing the lever, the backrest automatically locks (some models may require an additional operation of the lock button).

IV. Button Adjustment System

  1. Unlock state: Pull the button outwards. At this point, you can freely adjust the recline angle of the backrest.
  2. Lock state: Push the button inwards. The backrest is fixed at the current angle, allowing only height adjustment.

Adjustment Precautions

  1. Adjust the resistance according to body weight: Heavier individuals need to increase the resistance to maintain stability, while lighter individuals need to decrease the resistance to avoid exertion.
  2. Choose an angle suitable for the scenario:
    • When focusing on work: A small recline angle (about 10ยฐ-15ยฐ) keeps the body vertical or slightly leaning forward.
    • When relaxing and thinking: A larger recline angle (about 20ยฐ-30ยฐ) provides a comfortable lying experience.
    • During short breaks: Moderate recline (about 15ยฐ-20ยฐ) can relieve back muscle tension and promote blood circulation.
  3. Ensure balance: When adjusting, avoid excessive recline of the backrest causing the center of gravity to shift backwards, preventing the chair from tipping over.

Tip: If you still cannot adjust the chair after operation, it is recommended to check if the chair is damaged or refer to the product manual. If necessary, contact after-sales service for repair.
