Office Chair Recline Adjustment

Admin October 10, 2026

The core method for adjusting the recline of an office chair is to unlock the recline lock using a knob, lever, or wrench, adjust the angle, and then relock it in the desired position. The specific operation steps and precautions are as follows:

I. Types of Adjustment Mechanisms

  1. Knob-Type Adjustment

    • Commonly found on most office chairs, the adjustment knob is usually located on the right side beneath the seat, circular or oval in shape.
    • Operation Steps: Rotate the knob counterclockwise to unlock the recline angle, lean back slowly to a comfortable angle, and then tighten the knob clockwise to secure the position. Some knobs allow for adjusting the recline resistance by tightness (e.g., turning the black cylinder at the front of the gas lift clockwise increases resistance, suitable for heavier individuals; turning it counterclockwise decreases resistance).
  2. Lever-Type Adjustment

    • Often seen on gaming chairs or high-end ergonomic chairs, the lever is located on the left or right side beneath the seat and is made of plastic.
    • Operation Steps: Pull the lever upward to unlock the recline, adjust the angle, and then release the lever; the lock automatically engages to secure the position. Some levers support infinite adjustment, allowing the chair to stop at any angle when released.
  3. Wrench-Type Adjustment

    • Used as the unlocking mechanism on a few older or simpler computer chairs, the wrench is typically located beneath the seat near the back legs.
    • Operation Steps: Turn the wrench to unlock the recline, adjust the angle, and then return the wrench to its original position to complete the locking.

II. Basic Adjustment Steps

  1. General Operation: The adjustment handle on most office chairs is located on the right side of the seat (a few on the left), which may be a lever, knob, or lever. Sit upright and gently pull the handle to hear a 'click' sound, releasing the locked state; if the chair has an independent recline lock (such as some high-end models), you need to pull up the locking switch beneath the seat first.
  2. Angle Adjustment: Lean back slowly while continuously pulling the handle, and the backrest will gradually recline with the pressure; release the handle to automatically lock at a comfortable angle.
  3. Special Designs: Mechanical knob-type chairs require rotating the base knob (usually marked with arrow directions) to control resistance; pneumatic rod linkage chairs adjust through body weight, gently pushing the seat toward the backrest during recline activates the cushioning function; high-end models support synchronized armrest adjustment (such as the one-touch synchronization design of the Sihoo M1); smart touch-type chairs set the angle through backrest buttons or an app, with some models capable of remembering preferred settings.

III. Usage Precautions

  1. Angle Range: For office mode (60ยฐ - 90ยฐ), maintain eye level with the top of the screen and a natural neck position; for rest mode (90ยฐ - 135ยฐ), it is recommended to use a footrest to distribute leg pressure. For fabric chairs, the recline angle is recommended to be โ‰ค130ยฐ, while leather chairs can be slightly larger.
  2. Safe Operation: Avoid sudden force when reclining to prevent the gas lift from malfunctioning; regularly check if the adjustment components are loose (especially mechanical knobs); prolonged large-angle reclining on leather seats may accelerate material aging.
  3. Model Differences: For specific model adjustment instructions, refer to the label on the bottom of the chair or the brand's manual, as different brands may have design variations.
